Poster Per Diem: Alexander Iaccarino's "Akira" Movie Poster

For those wondering what the hell "Poster Per Diem" is / means / smells like, here's my not at all concise description. If you visit this site with any regularity, you already know I tend to write reviews for film and television inspired prints that are either currently on sale or are about to go on sale. And while I'll still be pouring the majority of my efforts into these sorts of posts, my daily "Poster Per Diem" feature will focus on awesome prints that have since sold out, never existed in the first place (AKA concept posters) or just bears mentioning. In other words: this is my chance to say, "I never got a chance, for whatever reason, to write about you on this here website, but I think you're really purty and I want to let the world know." Or something like that. Oh, and Per diem is latin for "per day" or "each day."

Akira Movie Poster
Alexander Iaccarino
11" x 17" (Giclée) - Signed and Numbered
$25 - Limited to 100

I love me some Akira goodness and I'll take it wherever I can find it. Case in point: Alexander Iaccarino's impressive Akira poster. I've never heard of this Alexander character, but 411posters showed me the light. I was immediately taken by the artist's level of detail and the insane amount of characters and content he was able to fit within the poster's boundaries. While the 24" x 36" version of this print is sold out, the smaller 11" x 17" version is still available through his storefront. To learn more about Mr. Iaccarino, be sure to visit thatkidwhodraws.com.

Write Up: Brandon Schaefer's Mel Brooks Movie Poster Set

"What's better than one Mel Brooks movie poster," you ask? Easy. Two Mel Brooks movie posters! Spoke Art, who's been working with the historic Castro Theatre in San Francisco to promote some recent screenings, has just released two incredible prints by artist Brandon Schaefer for a very, very reasonable price. In order to properly express myself I tried to find a clever quote from either Spaceballs or Blazing Saddles that accurately captured my excitement, but somehow "I am your father's brother's nephew's cousin's former roommate" wasn't really doing the trick. In lieu of the perfect quote, I think I'll just ramble on about how much I like these prints. Read on if you dare!

Spaceballs Movie Poster
Brandon Schaefer
18" x 24" (Giclée) - Signed and Numbered
$40 (Separately) / $60 (Set) - Limited to 120

Blazing Saddles Movie Poster
Brandon Schaefer
18" x 24" (Giclée) - Signed and Numbered
$40 (Separately) / $60 (Set) - Limited to 120

With every Brandon Schaefer poster I see, I love his work a little bit more, which has always been a bit of surprise to me given how I'm not usually one to fall for prints that prominently feature photographic elements. But sure enough, I've been consistently blown away by what Schaefer and fellow cineaste Jay Shaw have been doing recently and could easily add a ton of their artwork (and probably will) to this year's "Top 20" list. With that said, I'm not trying to place a box around what Brandon does. In fact, I'd say it's pretty clear by looking at the prints above that he doesn't necessarily lean on one style over another. It's his ability to change and adapt that makes him such an interesting artist to follow, and the only real through-line I can spot when it comes to Schaefer's work is his obvious love for the moving pictures. Both posters are relatively straight to the point, but manage to articulate the films' joke-a-minute construction with their iconic (and bizarre) characters / situations. If I had one complaint (and it's a pretty minor one), it would be that these posters weren't screen printed, especially the Spaceballs print, but honestly, they'll still look super sharp screen printed or no, so don't let that dissuade you from picking up the set.

These posters are currently available (yes, right now) through Spoke Art's store as either a set or can be purchased separately. Just a heads up though, you're saving $20 if you get the set, so it's a bit of a no-brainer in my opinion. Both posters measures 18" x 24" and are limited to 120. To see more of Brandon's work, be sure to visit seekandspeak.com, his Tumblr page, and his continually impressive contributions to the Silver Screen Society. You can also follow him on Twitter @seekandspeak. It probably isn't a bad idea to follow @spoke_art on Twitter and subscribe to their newsletter while you're at it.

Mountain Goats 2012 Gig Poster #2
Robert Wilson IV
18" x 24" (Screen Print) - Signed and Numbered
$30 - Limited to 100

These aren't necessarily movie related, but damn do they feel cinematic. Comic artist Robert Wilson IV created something which brings to mind many of my favorite post apocalyptic properties, including Mad Max, Escape from New York, all of the Fallout video games, DMZ, Wasteland and Y: The Last Man. In other words: these posters do more than just advertise what were surely kickass shows, they tell a story. There are a handful of these prints still available at Nakatomi Inc, so now's your chance if you're interested in grabbing one. Or something like that. Oh, and Per diem is latin for "per day" or "each day."

Eastern Promises Movie Poster
César Sebastián
Not for Sale - Concept Art

I love Eastern Promises! You've got a badass Mortensen, a weasely Cassel, and one of the strangest and most intense knife fights to ever take place in a bathhouse (though, to be fair, I'm guessing there are only maybe like two bathhouse knife fight scenes in the entirety of cinematic history). Nikolai's two-fingers-against-the-throat gesture (sign language for I'm gonna git you sucka) is masterfully depicted by artist César Sebastián and really highlights the shadow and subterfuge that make up such a huge part of Viggo's character. To see more of César's brilliance, be sure to checkout his blog and deviantArt page.

Poster Per Diem: Christopher Lee's "Star Wars" Movie Poster

Quick note: Apologies! I didn't put together a "Poster Per Diem" for Tuesday or Wednesday this week, so I'll be posting three of them today. Now, on with the show!

For those wondering what the hell "Poster Per Diem" is / means / smells like, here's my not at all concise description. If the Star Wars and Schoolhouse Rock! met at a bar one night, got really, really drunk (like blackout drunk), grabbed a room at the local Super 8 and made messy, kinky, beautiful, unprotected love, their child would probably look something like these prints. Artist Christopher Lee (not to be confused with the Hammer Films legend) was able to capture all the fun parts from the Star Wars series and made something that every nerd needs to own. You can find more of Christopher's artwork at thebeastisback.com and follow him on Twitter @thebeast_isback.

Also, I'd like to give a tip of the hat to reader Robert Sheppard for pointing me toward some really awesome artwork (including these fantastic Christopher Lee prints). As an FYI to everyone out there, if there's a an awesome print you want me to write about, send me a line at posterocalypse@gmail.com. I may not write about it, but then again, I might.

Today's "Poster Per Diem" is a twofer. As you may already know, I'm a sucker for anything Miyazaki and for my money Simon C Page's Castle in the Sky may even rival Moss' Studio Ghibli posters. For more information on the artist, be sure to visit excites.co.uk and follow @simoncpage on Twitter.

I've seen a few Dr. Strangelove prints in my day, but I can say this is easily the most awesome of the bunch. Scrojo masterfully uses negative space in order to draw the viewer to Sterling Hayden's crazed Brigadier General Jack Ripper and his apocalyptic cigar smoke. This is one poster that I always wish I had gotten back when it was a bit more affordable. Here's hoping Scrojo does a few more movie / television inspired prints in the near future. Head over to scrojo.com to learn more about this talented dude.

Heads Up: New Flesh's "Casablanca" Movie Posters

"If that plane leaves the ground and you're not with him, you'll regret it. Maybe not today. Maybe not tomorrow, but soon and for the rest of your life." "Here's looking at you, kid." "Play it once, Sam. For old times' sake." "Louie, I think this is the beginning of a beautiful friendship." Recognize those lines? Even if you haven't seen the film from which they came, there's a pretty decent chance those quotes struck a familiar chord. Leave it to the crew at New Flesh Prints to remind us just how gorgeous that classic film of classic films is with these beautiful Casablanca posters by N.E.

Poster Per Diem: Jay Shaw's "Paths of Glory" Movie Poster

A hearty thanks (and free print) go to reader Brett Smith who came up with the awesome title for my new daily poster column "Poster Per Diem." What do you think? Personally, I'm rather fond of it. For those wondering what the hell "Poster Per Diem" is / means / smells like, here's my not at all concise description. If you visit this site with any regularity, you already know I tend to write reviews for film and television inspired prints that are either currently on sale or are about to go on sale. I'll be honest, I own a ton of art that I absolutely adore, but that I'm fairly certain would never elicit any sort of appreciation from my non-poster collecting pals. But when I see something like Shaw's Paths of Glory poster, I'm hard pressed to imagine anyone who could think this print was anything but beautiful. Also, I would happily accept this as the new official artwork for Criterion's Paths of Glory packaging. If someone out there has seen fit to DIY themselves a Blu-ray cover out of Jay's work, shoot me an email. Write Up: Olly Moss' "The Dark Knight Rises" Movie Poster

Let's just get this out of the way. Olly Moss' The Dark Knight Rises print is a thing of beauty and elegance. His poster deserves to adorn every wall the world over and will probably end up somewhere on my "Top 20" list at year's end. In short: the artist did exactly what everyone expected him to do and came up with something that's both clever and stunning; something that perfectly captures the Caped Crusader's mysterious and dark nature. But enough about Olly's incredible artwork, its expert execution and cunning design were a given considering the artistic powerhouse behind it. What I really want to dig into is the way in which this poster will be released.

The Dark Knight Rises Movie Poster
Olly Moss
16" x 24" (Screen Print) - Numbered
$40 - Edition Size TBD

The Internet has been inundated with news of tomorrow's release and for good reason, it's shocking. For those few who either live under a rock or accidentally wandered onto this site after misspelling "monsterocalypse" in their browser's search bar, Mondo will be selling the above Dark Knight Rises print by Olly Moss to anyone who wants one for 24 hours. You read that right, a full day. To my knowledge, and I might be completely off base here, Mondo has never expressed any interest in a timed edition release because it dilutes the limited nature of their product / brand and contractually it can be difficult to green-light a run that epic when working with a studio. But here we are, about to purchase a poster for the Dark Knight Rises, one of the biggest films this year, by artist Olly Moss, one of the biggest poster artists in the world, and I've got to say, it feels good. Real good. I'm thinking this is probably a one-off that we won't see again for a long, long while, nor would I want it to become anything other than the occasional show of good faith from the poster gods up on high, but I'm hopeful that tomorrow's sale will prove to be a milestone in Mondo's trajectory and serve to convince Justin and company that a timed edition release is something that deserves to be experimented with again. Oh yeah, and I'm also really interested in seeing how long it takes before someone tries to put one up on eBay for a Buy It Now price of $200. I give it 15 minutes. What do you think?

Olly Moss' The Dark Knight Rises print will be available for purchase on Wednesday (7/18) starting at 12:01 AM CST and carrying into the following 24 hours. The poster will be sold through the Mondo storefront for $40 and measures 16" x 24". As part of this sale, one lucky person will also be getting a golden ticket that can be used to commission Olly for a poster of his or her choosing. I've personally always wanted an Olly Moss Gigli poster. Shit, was that out loud?! To learn more about Mr. Moss head over to ollymoss.com. And good luck, oh wait, never mind! Take 'er easy! Bam! Pow! Biff!

Reason #133 I'm Bummed I'm Not at Comic-Con: Olly Moss' Prints

I went to San Diego last year for Comic-Con and proceeded to purchase tons of art with money I didn't have. Don't get me wrong, I love the posters I bought, but I definitely had a case of whiplash after checking out my monthly bank statement when I got home. In an effort to stave off financial ruin I abstained from Comic Con this year, but you can bet I'm still super bummed I couldn't make it for a number of reasons. Reason #133: Olly Moss' prints!

The Dark Knight Rises Movie Poster (SDCC Variant)
Olly Moss
24" x 36" (Screen Print) - Signed and Numbered
$100 - Limited to 180

Take a look at these prints! I mean, seriously, just take a look at this stuff! Olly absolutely killed it in pretty much every possible way. Thankfully, everyone will have a chance to own a smaller version of The Dark Knight Rises poster this Wednesday (7/18). Unfortunately, when it comes to all the other stuff, we're S.O.L. (unless, of course, you want to pay insane amounts of money for them in the secondary market and nobody wants to do that). I'm still kind of shocked Mondo decided to release their Princess Mononoke prints exclusively at SDCC, but it's their product and it certainly made a splash among this year's attendees. So there it is, reason #133 why I'm bummed I didn't go to Comic-Con this year. Now, get off my lawn you kids!

Reason #992 I'm Bummed I'm Not at Comic-Con: Mark Englert's "You Are My Lucky Star" Art Print

Reason #992: Mark Englert's "You Are My Lucky Star" art print!

"You Are My Lucky Star" Art Print
Mark Englert

$50 - Limited to TBD (Less than 150)
Inspired By: Alien

In space no one can hear a spastic Xenomorph freaking out...or at least that's what I thought when I saw this amazing artwork by artist Mark Englert. I can't even imagine how beautiful this thing must look up close. I want it! Englert's "You Are My Lucky Star" art print will be available on Friday at 1 PM at Gallery 1988's Comic-con booth (#405). Commence jealousy in 3, 2, 1...

Reason #765 I'm Bummed I'm Not at Comic-Con: Mondo's "Game of Thrones" Posters

I went to San Diego last year for Comic-Con and proceeded to purchase tons of art with money I didn't have. Don't get me wrong, I love the posters I bought, but I definitely had a case of whiplash after checking out my monthly bank statement when I got home. In an effort to stave off financial ruin I abstained from Comic Con this year, but you can bet I'm still super bummed I couldn't make it for a number of reasons. Reason #765: Mondo's Game of Thrones posters!

Game of Thrones Poster
Vania Zouravliov
24" x 33" (Screen Print) - Numbered
Limited to 330

These are all standout prints, but I think the clear winner in this group is Vania Zouravliov's absolutely mind-blowing artwork. It's seriously nuts how detailed and intricate this thing is! It's good when a poster design makes you feel like you're on drugs (the good kind), right? I don't believe these are available yet, but they'll be released in the next few days (or hours) at Mondo's SDCC booth. And with that I bid you adieau.

Write Up: Tim Doyle's "The Fifth Element" Movie Poster

How's your day been so far? Mine's been alright. I definitely ate too much, I didn't exercise, I remembered that I need to update my resume (ugh), and then I realized I'm about to move to a new city without a job lined up - a thought which is both exhilarating and terrifying. It wasn't a bad day though. And it wasn't exactly an amazing day. Just another Wednesday that sits comfortably in the grey area between those two extremes. However, I can say with complete confidence that one discovery definitely raised my spirits this morning: Bottleneck Gallery's recent charity work. In short, the proceeds from the below posters will go toward Paul's Brain Trust, which you can read more about by clicking here. Bottleneck Gallery has already donated money to the National Breast Cancer Foundation and Water for the South Sudan with previous poster sales. It's pretty much perfect, isn't it? Not only do you get to feel great about doing something good for somebody, you also get a beautiful screen printed poster. In the immortal words of Stan Lee: "'Nuff said!"

Fifth Element Movie Poster (Regular)

$30 - Limited to 225

Fifth Element Movie Poster (Variant)
Tim Doyle
18" x 24" (Screen Print) - Signed and Numbered
$50 - Limited to 75

I'd love to see all of Tim Doyle's Japanese movie posters side-by-side on. There's just something innately disquieting about immediately recognizing the film, but not being able to read or translate its title...and I kind of love that. These posters rightly feature all of the film's main players, but center around one of The Fifth Element's strongest and strangest elements - the outlandish character / creature design. For this reason I think the regular version is superior, as it clearly shows off the film's vibrant palette. I'll be honest, it's been a while since I've seen the film, and I'm not sure if they hold any significance, but I love the cathedral-like window frames that surround Willis, Oldman and Tucker. Not only because they suggest an almost sacred importance, but they kind of look like rocket ships too. So there's that.

Tim Doyle's The Fifth Element movie posters are currently available through Bottleneck Gallery's website. The regular version is limited to an edition of 225 and costs $30, while the variant is limited to 75 and costs $50. To learn more about Tim Doyle, head over to mrdoyle.com, purchase more of his artwork at nakatomiinc.com, and follow him on Twitter @NakatomiTim. "You see, boys forget what their country means by just reading The Land of the Free in history books. Then they get to be men they forget even more. Liberty's too precious a thing to be buried in books, Miss Saunders. Men should hold it up in front of them every single day of their lives and say: I'm free to think and to speak. My ancestors couldn't, I can, and my children will. Boys ought to grow up remembering that." - Jefferson Smith (Mr. Smith Goes to Washington)
Good luck and good night!

Write Up: Laurent Durieux's Mondo Movie Posters

Laurent Durieux has officially been welcomed into the ranks of Mondo's much sought after stable of artists and thank goodness for that. Laurent's artwork has consistently stunned as his hatching and cross-hatching approach offers something both simple and intricately beautiful.

The Iron Giant Movie Poster
Laurent Durieux
21" x 36" (Screen Print) - Numbered
$60 - Limited to 425

Durieux's art has an old school charm about it. It's easy to picture his work in a 1950s periodical, visually prognosticating the whizbang future of man's colonization of Mars and the flying cars every Tom, Dick and Harry are sure to one day own. There's a nostalgic optimism inherent in his posters - something not weighed down by irony or cynicism - and that's exactly what makes him the perfect person to realize the movie classic King Kong and the modern animated classic The Iron Giant for Mondo.

For those familiar with Durieux's work (and for those that aren't, I highly recommend you visit his Flickr page), you may already know how amazing he is when it comes to drawing robots of any kind. The man clearly has a penchant for characters of the mechanized variety. And when combining that affection with the sincere buoyancy evident in his artwork, you're left with something that perfectly embodies the life-affirming story of a young boy, an alien robot and the unlikely friendship they strike up. While I'm on the topic of The Iron Giant, can you believe that this hasn't come out on Blu-ray yet? Seriously?!

King Kong Movie Poster (Regular)
Laurent Durieux
24" x 36" (Screen Print) - Numbered
$60 - Limited to 375

King Kong Movie Poster (Variant)
Laurent Durieux
24" x 36" (Screen Print) - Numbered
$120 - Limited to 175

As talented as Laurent is with our robotic brethren, he's just as capable when it comes to sky scrapers and sprawling cityscapes as evidenced by his amazing King Kong prints. I've got to admit, I'm completely floored by both posters, but it's the King Kong variant, which truly has my heart racing. His cross-hatching technique provides such rich and realistic textures that I find myself investigating every wave of the curtain and every angle of the windowsill for some sign that this is only an illustration. And I haven't even mentioned Kong's roaring visage, which masterfully conjures one of the most iconic scenes in all of cinematic history. Every single one of these posters is "Best of the Year" material and I couldn't think of a better introduction to Durieux's work for the Mondo crowd.

Laurent Durieux's Iron Giant and King Kong posters will be available tomorrow through Mondo at a random time. I've included all of the pricing information below each image, and if you're really set on grabbing one of these prints (and why wouldn't you be), you'll probably want to be making good use of your computer's F5 key in addition to following @MondoNews. To see more of Laurent's artwork, be sure to check out his Flickr page, which features some absolutely jaw-dropping stuff.
