For the folks who haven't yet experienced Hausu by Nobuhiko Ôbayashi, here's how I would best describe the movie: Picture a scenic hillside in Japan, and on that hillside is a house, and in that house are seven giggly Japanese schoolgirls, but unbeknownst to them the home also accommodates a vengeful disembodied head, a carnivorous piano, a murderous grandfather clock, a man who is at some point turned into a mound of bananas, and a batshit-crazy ghost cat. And just for good measure, all of this surreal lunacy unfolds under a rainbow of psychedelic colors and sounds. To say the film is nuts would be an understatement, but it's also a blast to watch and something every cinephile should check out.

In honor of a 2011 Hausu screening by the Dublin-based Hollywood Babylon Film Club, artist Mark Wickham created an amazing print that celebrates the film's odd marriage between gore and cutesy Japanese culture to absolute perfection. I'm about a day behind on my "Poster Per Diems," which means I won't be typing a ton about this print, but I'm pleased as punch to be sharing it with everyone. First things first, if you haven't seen Robert Aldrich's What Ever Happened to Baby Jane?, stop reading this right now and watch the film. It's from the 60s, it's black and white, and it's one of the most terrifying / entertaining things you'll ever experience. Bette Davis psychologically and physically tormenting Joan Crawford? Yes, please. I really fell for Chris Brake's Baby Jane print because I think he absolutely nailed Baby Jane Hudson's full-on mental collapse in a stylish, if-you-gaze-into-the-abyss-the-abyss-gazes-also-into-you sort of way. I meant to write about theses beauties when they first went on sale, but for some reason I just never got around to it. For that alone, I deserve a shovel to the head, because these posters are positively jaw-dropping. Jason Edmiston, a man who's already crafted a large body of stunning prints, deserves an extra round of kudos and maybe some sort of presidential medal of valor good art-making (apparently naming presidential medals is not one of my strengths) for his ode to that 1980s cult gem Killer Klowns from Outer Space. Wouldn't you know it, the posters are now long gone, but you can find more stellar work on the Internetz (I added a 'z') at skuzzles.com and jasonedmiston.com. I won't lie, I've only made it through one season of The Walking Dead so far, but I know a good looking print when I see one and Luke Butland's Walking Dead poster is pretty damn sharp. The good folks at Poster Collective ("PC") have put out yet another delicious looking design in the form of three exceptional screen prints by artist Randy Ortiz. This not only marks the first (and hopefully not last) time Ortiz has worked with the Collective, it also represents the first time a PC release has not been explicitly film-related. Unfortunately, I'm a little late to the party on this one and the glow in the dark variant has already sold out, but both the blue and gold metallic versions are still available for $30 and $35, respectively. This one's a little bittersweet for me because, on the one hand, holy shit, it's a Martin Ansin Taxi Driver poster! Again: holy shit, it's a Martin Ansin Taxi Driver poster! On the other hand, this print will only be available to the lucky folks attending a screening of the film in Austin next week. Meaning, if you really want to get your hands on one (and honestly, who doesn't?), then you'd better be prepared to pay a hefty price on the secondary market. But enough whining, it is what it is. And what it is, is a breathtaking piece of artwork by one of the most talented artists in the world for one of the most celebrated films ever made. Ansin skillfully taps into Bickle's isolation, suggesting that even while Travis is walking the crowded streets of New York City, his inability to communicate with those around him has all but guaranteed a sad and solitary existence. In the words of Mr. Bickle himself (taken from Taxi Driver):

"Loneliness has followed me my whole life. Everywhere. In bars, in cars, sidewalks, stores, everywhere. There's no escape. I'm God's lonely man..."

I've never written about artist Señor Salme before today and I'm the sorrier for it because, wow, this dude has some major talent. Now, on with the show. While I don't think the 1936 film Things to Come is the height of cinema, it does certainly feature some amazing special effects. And Salme's take on the character John Cabal paints a stunning picture of the alternate universe dreamed up by H.G. Wells and director William Cameron Menzies. For fans of old school sci-fi and admirers of before-its-time spectacle, one of these must-have prints can purchased at Society6 in a variety of sizes. If you've already experienced Blue Velvet, then you know "Underneath the Surface" may be the most appropriate title one could ask for of anything inspired by Lynch's small town neo-noir. For every inch, we, the audience, have travelled down the rabbit hole during Velvet's runtime, artist Mayra Fersner has lovingly populated this print with the weird, the wonderful, and the uniquely surreal. Mayra on the poster's creation (from the Hag Cult blog):

"When I first created the illustration 'Underneath the Surface' (inspired by Blue Velvet), it was with the intention of making it a print. I thought it would be a fun idea to use some elements from the Pabst Blue Ribbon can in my design. I hadn’t had a chance to print these until recently. They turned out really well. The screenprints themselves are with dark blue and silver inks. Each “18″ x 24″ print will be unique as they will be hand embellished with red inks (screen inks).

As a huge fan of artist Joe Wilson and an even bigger fan of stop motion pioneer Ray Harryhausen, my enjoyment of this poster was all but assured. Recreating some of Ray's best known effects (Medusa from Clash of the Titans, the saucers from Earth vs. the Flying Saucers, the Cyclops from The 7th Voyage of Sinbad, etc.), Joe has lovingly surrounded the man with a lifetime's worth of fantastical achievements. I don't believe this poster is currently for sale, but if you're interested in learning more about the doc, I'd recommend checking out the trailer below and visiting the film's Facebook page.

I've been a big fan of Dan Mumford's ever since I first laid eyes on his grotesque The Thing poster. Since then, he's created a slew of stellar horror inspired art and some fantastic non-movie related prints. I'm happy to report that his work (film-centric or not) still retains that horrifically beautiful aesthetic that originally hooked me. Lucky for us, Mr. Mumford just released a bunch of prints as part of his "Studies III" series, and they're downright terrifying (the good sort of terrifying, that is). Today's PPD is one of those prints that I regret never having picked up. Not only is it a jaw-dropping Paul Pope masterpiece (we're talking about the guy who did 100% and Heavy Liquid after all), it's also a beautiful tribute to Akira Kurosawa's Yojimbo and Toshiro Mifune's incredible performance. I'll be honest, I wasn't nuts about Craig Drake's Mondo Gallery show, but his Hunger inspired print is bloody fantastic. It captures that 80s sleek chic vibe to a tee and makes good use of Bowie's angular visage. Drake's "The Hunger" will be available tomorrow (11/8) through Ltd. Art Gallery's website at 12 PM PST as part of their "POP 2!" art show. The print costs $50 and is limited to an edition of 83, with the first 33 customers getting a metallic red variant. I've seen a few The Thing prints cleverly use MacReady's head in my time, but Kloc's poster takes the cake. This is seriously one of craziest, most awesome prints I've seen all year. I felt the need for a bit of the ole funny stuff today and found this inspired take on what Totoro (of My Neighbor Totoro fame) does when he isn't helping little Japanese kids get through tough times. It turns out he's a bit of perv. This hilarious and great looking print is currently available through the Nucleus Gallery website for $30. "Peeping Totoro" is part of the Totoro Forest Project, which means a portion of the proceeds will be going to Hayao Miyazaki's Totoro No Furusato National Fund.
