Mondo's "Game of Thrones" Art Prints Part 2

It's time for some more Game of Thrones inspired artwork, this time by Toronto-based studio Phantom City Creative and artist Vania Zouravliov. All four posters seem to suggest the interconnectedness of the series' characters as the figures are literally fused into one another. Additionally, both sets of prints seem to mostly depict the animals that represent each house, which makes this dual release all the more appropriate. If I had to choose a favorite between the two designs, I'd probably go with Zouravliov's prints for their sheer complexity alone, but it goes without saying that anyone who's lucky enough to get their hands on what Mondo's putting out tomorrow should consider themselves blessed. With all that said, I'm nearing Game of Thrones artwork fatigue and am definitely looking forward to seeing Mondo release something non-Thrones related.

Tom Whalen and Dark Hall Mansion have joined forces to create something that's sure to make you feel all warm and gooey inside. Hear me out: I know there's no empirical data to back this statement up, but I'm fairly certain that owning this poster and placing it on a wall in your home will make you a better, happier person. Again, I don't have any proof that substantiates my theory, but I just don't see how it's possible to be sad around something this full of joy. Also, Whalen absolutely nailed it...again.

Actually, I don't think he goes by that name, but the wordplay was just too much for me to pass up. I don't have the time to write a proper review today, but once all of Mark's copies go on sale, I'll definitely post something a bit more comprehensive. Big ups to Collider's "Limited Paper" series for breaking this news!

I went to San Diego last year for Comic-Con and proceeded to purchase tons of art with money I didn't have. Don't get me wrong, I love the posters I bought, but I definitely had a case of whiplash after checking out my monthly bank statement when I got home. In an effort to stave off financial ruin I abstained from Comic Con this year, but you can bet I'm still super bummed I couldn't make it for a number of reasons. Reason #765: Mondo's Game of Thrones posters!

These are all standout prints, but I think the clear winner in this group is Vania Zouravliov's absolutely mind-blowing artwork. It's seriously nuts how detailed and intricate this thing is! It's good when a poster design makes you feel like you're on drugs (the good kind), right? I don't believe these are available yet, but they'll be released in the next few days (or hours) at Mondo's SDCC booth. And with that I bid you adieau.

Koren Shadmi's "Untitled (Serling)" Art Print

If you're reading today's post, and chances are that you are if you've made it this far (evidently I learned everything I know about writing from Dr. Seuss), you probably have two questions in mind. The first goes something like this: "Could it be true, you actually posted something new two days in a row?" Yes, believe it or not, I'm attempting to write with some semblance of consistency - I'm as surprised as you are. The second being: "When are you going to mention Mondo's recently announced Avengers posters?" Honestly, while I think both prints are really well done, neither has me super pumped and I know everyone else on the Internet is going to be writing about them, so I'd rather mention something potentially less sought-after (even though today's print WAS mentioned on the OMG Posters blog). If you are interested in learning more about Olly Moss' and Tom Whalen's Avengers prints, I'd recommend you head over to the The Huffington Post and follow @MondoNews. Alright, now that that's out of the way, let's move to the main course, which consists of Koren Shadmi's absolutely breathtaking Twilight Zone inspired artwork with a healthy helping of supernatural comeuppance and Serling's pearly-whites on the side! By the way, the teeth are meant to be a garnish. Please don't eat the garnish.

I think (or at least hope) you'll agree with me when I say, there's not NEARLY enough Twilight Zone inspired art currently available. Sure, there's the occasional gallery show that pops up here and there (and thank God for those), but when you have 156 episodes, each with their own unique cast of characters and sometimes chilling, but always enjoyable tales of morality, it's obvious the surface has just barely been scratched. In truth, it's been quite a while since I've seen a Twilight Zone print I've thoroughly appreciated, which makes me all the happier to state the dry spell is over and promote Shadmi's spectacular "Untitled (Serling)." Koren's art has a soft appearance to it, as if everything is surrounded by a slight and ethereal halo, and his compositions are often surreal and minimalistic in their execution. All of these elements work wonderfully together and really speak to the heart of The Twilight Zone's often thoughtful stories. I would have been completely content had Shadmi only decided to feature a dapper looking Serling sans any embellishments, but the fact that he's overlaid his creation with iconic creatures and moments from the series makes this poster all the better in every conceivable way. Laurent Durieux's "Gigantor" Art Prints

Is there anything more Japanese than giant robots? Sure, there's sushi, Godzilla, MiniDisc players, but after that, I have to assume it's pretty much all just giant robots. As a quick disclaimer to this review, I've never read any of the Gigantor manga, but I have seen a few episodes of the Gigantor cartoon, or as it's known in Japan, Tetsujin 28-go, mostly because I was inspired to seek out the series after hearing about these prints, and what I saw was pretty cool. There's no doubt the show looks dated (mind you, it originally aired in 1963), but I love watching older animation and it's surprisingly violent. I shit you not, there's plenty of scenes where Gigantor, a massive robot who could have easily disabled an enemy's vehicle in a safe manner, instead opts to fly right through it, or smash it with his massive metal gauntlets, thereby condemning the boat's / jet's / tank's operator to a slow and fiery death. In other words: it's kind of awesome. What's even more amazing is Laurent Durieux's killer prints based on the series, don't you think?

I was never really into Transformers as a kid. I'm not sure why, it just didn't interest me. In fact, I don't think the whole giant robot thing really clicked with me until I read Geoff Darrow's amazing Big Guy and Rusty the Boy Robot, and was later reaffirmed by the wonderful Iron Giant. Laurent's prints perfectly capture the mind-blowing enormity that a towering metallic defender of justice should possess and somehow makes it look easy in the process. From a distance these posters appear to be fairly straight forward (beautiful, yes, but simplistic), though that couldn't be further from the truth. Take a closer look at the two images included in this post, and you'll immediately notice just how involved all of the hatching and cross-hatching is - the print looks clean, while also mesmerizing on a granular level. I'm honestly at a loss to tell you which one looks better, but I have no doubt these will be a big success come Thursday morning!

Truth time: I'm one of the unwashed masses that hasn't seen much of the critically acclaimed Mad Men. Now hear me out: I bought the first three seasons on Blu-ray last Black Friday with the full intention of immediately jumping into series, but then other things got in the way. Other things, like Breaking Bad, a Criterion Collection sale, Skyrim, misplacing the first three seasons of Mad Men...you know, stuff. But whether I'm well versed in the comings and goings of Don Draper or not, I know when I see something I like. And I really like New Flesh's gorgeous new Mad Men inspired prints by artist N.E.

I was immediately reminded of Martin Ansin, my absolute favorite artist, when I first saw N.E.'s depiction of Draper, and that's a pretty great thing from where I'm standing. His construction of Don's body isn't just an amalgam of hard angles, instead, we see a man made up of complicated curved lines (some thick, some thin) that suggests something organic, something imperfect, something real. But there's more to these prints than just amazing artwork. I'm not sure whose idea this was, but whoever's to blame should be awarded the screen printing version of the Oscar. The idea in question? The variant was printed on authentic tabacco company blue-prints / schematics. Pretty great, right? I'm not even sure where you would get something like that. It's an inspired idea and, in the spirit of complete resentment, I'd like to offer a hearty "damn you" to the handful of people who were able to grab one before it sold out.

Danny Miller's "Zombie of The Walking Dead" Print Sets

I was one of the many who first discovered The Walking Dead when it only came in the form of ink on paper. Like many of my fellow comic nerds, I loved The Walking Dead because there wasn't really any black and white storytelling, everything was told in shades of grey; it felt organic and real (or as real as a story about a zombie apocalypse can feel, that is). Once the story made the transition to television, the first thing that struck me (and many others like me) was just how impressive the oozing, putrid, stumbling zombies looked in 1080p. They were both gross and beautiful in a way that any horror aficionado can appreciate. And much of that can be attributed to the work of Greg Nicotero and his KNB EFX Group. For those unfamiliar with the man, Greg has worked on films like Evil Dead 2, Misery, Army of Darkness, Pulp Fiction, Wes Craven's New Nightmare, In the Mouth of Madness, Mulholland Dr. and many, many, many more. Long story short, Greg reached out to artist Danny Miller and had him create some prints in honor of the many wonderful undead featured in The Walking Dead television series.

Just by looking at the images above you can tell that Danny was the perfect guy for this job. His ability to recreate the fully realized and absolutely terrifying visages of dilapidated flesh is, well, terrifying. But I think the highest compliment that can be paid to artwork like this, besides saying it's wonderfully executed, which it is, is to mention how much my skin is crawling. And yes, these prints make my skin crawl, especially the bloated husk of a zombie on the left (yum). Out of the two sets, I appreciate the regular version a bit more, due to it being more colorful, but I'm guessing the variant is going to be a stunning metallic silver, so it's bound to look pretty sharp in person. I know there are already a ton of Night of the Living Dead and Dawn of the Dead prints and posters floating around on the Internet, but I'm thinking it's completely okay for Miller to work on whatever zombie-related franchise he wants to try his hand at based on his Walking Dead work, don't you think?

One of the coolest things about these sets is that they're signed by both the artist, Danny Miller, AND special effects makeup man Greg Nicotero. DoomCMYK's "Game Time 3" Art Print

I don't know about you, but I love Adventure Time. There's just something about its self-reflexive absurdity and the clandestine adult themes hiding right under the show's candy (kingdom) surface. I've seen a few of DoomCMYK's Adventure Time inspired prints in the past, but this is the first time I'm (barely) ahead of the curve enough to actually tell my readers about it. Take a look!

This print isn't really doing anything monumental or important, it's not pushing the boundaries of the medium, but damn if doesn't put a huge smile on my face. DoomCMYK's poster captures that carefree and zany (did I really just use the word "zany"?) attitude that Finn and Jake so unashamedly exude, regardless of the insanity they face each and every episode. But beyond the artist's ability to maintain the show's tone, I feel the need to congratulate him for perfectly reproducing the Adventure Time characters while seamlessly combining them with a ton of popular video game franchises. That's not to say there isn't something deliriously entertaining and yet oddly unnerving about seeing Finn tote around a handgun, even if it's in the guise of Solid Snake. I'll be honest, it kind of weirds me out (but in a good way). Bottom line: I've really enjoyed what DoomCMYK has done so far, and am looking forward to many more mathematical Adventure Time inspired artworks from this artist going forward.

Fernando Fro Reza's "The Man from Gallifrey" Art Print

I remember being a youngster in the Bay Area and staying up late on school nights watching PBS. I know, badass, right? We didn't have cable, meaning there wasn't much in the way of channels, and I didn't have a computer in my room, so the Internet wasn't easily accessible after the bell tolled midnight, but I did happen to have an old TV set. Every once in a blue moon, KQED (at least, I think it was KQED) would host a telethon with some pretty amazing programming. Occasionally the on-air fundraiser would yield a disappointing evening filled with British sitcoms that clearly weren't aimed at my demographic, like Are You Being Served, As Time Goes By, and the Canadian handyman series, The Red Green Show. But sometimes, the planets aligned and I was introduced to some spectacular science fiction, like Neon Genesis Evangelion, Red Dwarf, and the focus of tonight's post, Doctor Who. I was immediately taken with The Doctor. Now keep in mind, this wasn't the new Doctor Who, this was the older series, the 1963 to 1989 series. And I loved every corny, weird, cost-effective minute of that show. I mention all this, because when I first saw Fernando Fro Reza's impressive Doctor Who inspired print, I was immediately reminded of just how much the series meant to me when I was younger, and the indefatigable nature of the Who franchise.

Fernando Fro Reza's "The Man from Gallifrey" art print features not only the newer Doctors (Eccleston, Tennant and Smith), but all the Doctors past (even Paul McGann). And while the fact that it covers the entirety of the Who-niverse is great, the print also offers a ton of smaller Easter egg-type touches for all us Who-ligans (please, somebody stop me). I had the opportunity to ask Fernando why he was such a fan of the series, but even more importantly, who his favorite Doctors were - here's what he had to say:

"I've heard from a few people that your favorite Doctor is always the one you came in with, and for me that was Eccleston who did an amazing job. But after watching all of the new series and a bit of the older ones I think it really comes down to David Tennant and Tom Baker. Something that Doctor Who does really well is treat incredible situations in a very real and grounded way and as zany and stylized as Baker's and Tennant's portrayals could get, they still felt very real. I really like the idea that for 50 years there has been a lineage of men playing the same person, each actor adding more layers and quirks to the character. And based on its success it's poised to continue for a 100 more. Which is why I hope this tribute is fitting, in a way it features all the Doctors past present and future."

For the record, I totally agree with his opinion of Tennant and Tom Baker. And when asked to point out a few of the hidden gems this print features, Fernando was nice enough to share a secret or two:

"As for the Easter eggs there's a few little things thrown in, if you look closely the broken spring in the top left is actually the spinning flight trail of a small Tardis. At the bottom there's a group of Doctor Who villains, the character on the far right has two hearts and is supposed to represent the Master."

It's a fantastic design, but I think the coolest thing about the poster, besides Tom Baker's colorful scarf of course, is that Fro Design Co has "future proofed" the print. Here's the basic concept: every time a regeneration takes place, Fernando will send you a vinyl press-on of the new Doctor along with instructions on where to place it. It's a pretty novel idea, and one that I think is incredibly inspired and totally in line with the themes of Doctor Who. So, there you have it. The print is a bit more expensive than many of Fro Design Co's past offerings, but the idea of having an always up-to-date Doctor Who picture is pretty awesome.

Mike Mitchell's "Adventure Time" Posters

I've been a huge fan of Adventure Time since day one. Now, I'm not saying that to brag, rather, I'm hoping you'll use my admission as a catalyst to watch as much of the series as you possibly can. It's really amazing. And it seems I'm not the only one who thinks so, as Mondo will be releasing a stunning set of Adventure Time prints by artist Mike Mitchell later today (11/25).

Mike Mitchell absolutely nailed the look and feel of the series. His posters present Jake the dog and Finn the human in exactly the way you would have imagined. He's even seen fit to add some of the show's hilarious side characters, like Lumpy Space Princess, the staring horse (which is actually a costume housing the Ice King), and Beemo! By the way, if that previous sentence made zero sense, I, again, highly recommend checking out the series. I'm not really sure what else to say. I love this print, it's pretty much perfect, and I can't imagine any fans of the show being disappointed by it. I think I prefer the variant, if only because it's a bit more colorful, and Adventure Time is such a colorful show, but the regular version is still fairly algebraic in every conceivable way. Bottom line: if you love the series, you'll need to be putting that F5 button to work come sale time.

Rich Kelly's "A Piece of the Action" Star Trek Prints

Wow. It's been over a month since I last wrote about a Mondo release. That's kind of nuts when you think about the fact that they release one or more posters every week. Thankfully my lack of Mondo love is to be be remedied by tonight's review of the badass "A Piece of the Action" Star Trek print by Rich Kelly.

I think I can safely say Rich Kelly is one of my favorite artists. He has a very unique and playful aesthetic; it's practically impossible to look at one of his prints without smiling. Kelly's slightly abstract take on Captain Kirk and Spock, complete with long, almost cartoonish legs, decidedly large heads, and some fairly imposing Tommy guns has old school cool written all over it. For those who've never seen "A Piece of the Action," you'll undoubtedly recognize Spock and Kirk, but you may not know the two bosses at the lower corners, Bela Oxmyx on the right and Jojo Krako on the left. This is one of those classic Star Trek episodes, and in all honesty, I think it's better than "The Trouble with Tribbles," if for no other reason than the hilariously complex card game Fizzbin. Seriously, can you imagine a society modeled after old-timey American gangsterdom? It's just too good. Rich even managed to fit Oxmyx's weapon showcase into the background. A perfect poster for a perfect episode.

Scrojo's "Party Down" Marathon Poster

When I discovered this poster was being released tomorrow, tonight's post was a no brainer for me. I LOVED (yeah, all caps) this show when it was on and cried tears of tearful sadness when it was canceled after only two seasons. As a little background, I had seen pictures of this poster when the Alamo Drafthouse held their Party Down marathon in June, but had no idea how to actually get my hands on one. Until now, that is.

Much like the show, this poster is pretty minimal; Party Down was never really about the sets (well I guess it was, kind of), it was about the interactions between the characters and the hilarity that ensued. Running with the minimalist theme here, how great is it that the only real color is the team's bow ties? That's just too perfect and adds a really dynamic element to the sparse design. And I'm not sure if this is true (please correct me if I'm wrong), but it looks like the grey background may actually be more of a metallic silver, which would be absolutely beautiful in person. If there's one thing I could nitpick, it would have to be the lack of Jane Lynch's Constance Carmell in the poster. Sure, she wasn't in every episode, but she was such an integral part of the show and was a bit more memorable than Megan Mullally's Lydia Dunfree in my opinion. Then again, Jane Lynch wasn't at the marathon in person, so it makes sense why she wasn't included.

Donald Smith's "The Wire" Art Print

The last few releases I've written about have been from fairly successful and well known artists, but there's something really refreshing about finding someone you've never heard of and singing his or her praises. With that sleep inducing preamble out of the way I'd like to present a fantastic piece of artwork from a Mr. Donald Smith.

The Wire

The Wire, in my humble opinion, is the greatest television series ever made. That may change in the future, in fact I'm sure it will, but for now The Wire sits unparalleled in my estimation. The reason I bring this is up is because I'm constantly stupefied as to how in this current explosion of pop culture artwork (Gallery 1988, Mondo, Spoke Art, Phone Booth Gallery, etc.) there hasn't been more Wire-centric art. What gives? Thankfully, Mr. Smith has seen fit to fill that dry well with this very Wire-centric print. Looking at the layout and the character construction I'm immediately reminded of the beautiful line work of one Tyler Stout, with its cramped composition and its huge cast of characters on display. And that shouldn't be too surprising, The Wire is after all an ensemble show and over its five brilliantly plotted seasons there were more than a few (far more than a few) characters we grew to love and hate. I also love the streaks of blue that seem to dance throughout the print almost teasing your eye. Needless to say, I'm excited to see what Donald does next.

Donald Smith's The Wire print measures 21.5" x 11" and is currently available through his Etsy storefront. The poster is limited to an edition of 40 (as of this writing Etsy lists only six available) and costs £20.00 (approximately $34). Parks & Recreation - Mike Mitchell

Does this poster remind you of anything? If you rudely shouted out, "Casablanca!" Without raising your hand, you're right. Well done Mr. Manners. Mike Mitchell, an artist whose poster work I've proudly hung on my wall before, was tasked with creating an image honoring one of the best television comedies on air right now, Parks & Recreation, and has surpassed even my highest expectations. I love, love, love that he decided to place Nick Offerman's Ron Swanson (easily the best character on the show) in the forefront. It's a tie between Danger's The Walking Dead and Mitchell's Parks & Recreation, but this poster is definitely in my top two of the bunch. The poster will be available for purchase on site at PaleyFest tomorrow (3/9) and the remaining stock will be available through Gallery 1988's site. Eastbound & Down - Derek Deal

I had never heard of Derek Deal until today, but after looking at his site and perusing his store, I'm the better for it (check out his Wilhelm Scream gig posters)! Derek pays tribute to what is without a doubt, one of the craziest, most in-your-face, badass, selfish assholes around - Kenny Powers. I haven't caught the second season of this show yet, but I do own the first season and play it whenever I want to laugh or am feeling particularly mean spirited (this show is mean - that's one of the reasons I love it). This poster pretty much says it all, it's loud (green and yellow), it's made to look like a baseball card and it's literally flipping the bird at the viewer - perfection, thy name is this poster. Again, make sure to check out Derek's site and store for some great artwork, and be sure to regularly visit the G1988 blog for online release details. This poster will be sold at PaleyFest on Thursday (3/10) and whatever is left will be sold through Gallery 1988.

Freaks and Geeks / Undeclared - Phantom City Creative

I feel like it was just yesterday that Phantom City Creative was a brand spanking new design studio and now they're all over the place! First, my congrats go to Phantom City Creative for putting out some of the coolest and prettiest poster designs in recent memory. And second, my congrats (again) go out to Phantom City Creative for doing an amazing job on this Freaks & Geeks / Undeclared poster. I really like how the artist tinted this image with green and yellow, it reminds me of an old photograph that's lost some color with age or sun damage, but is far from forgotten. Be sure to check out the Phantom City Creative website, as well as their Etsy store. By the way, have you seen what they've done for Twitch? It's fairly awesome! This poster will be available at PaleyFest on Saturday (3/12) and will probably be on sale the following day at Gallery 1988's store.

I could try and tell you in my own words what PaleyFest is, but I think Jensen Karp, co-owner of Gallery 1988, does a much better job and also touches upon the reason I'm writing this post in the first place (taken from the G1988 blog):

"Proud to announce that we were involved in this year's PaleyFest Honors, a yearly festival that celebrates television's rich and diverse programming and the creative process behind the medium for the last twenty-seven years. Each year they pick a group of shows to honor, and then the cast and crew participate in a panel and Q&A. It's pretty amazing.

We were asked this year to curate limited edition silkscreen posters to commemorate the nights' events. We will selling posters for the PaleyFest Honors for the Walking Dead (3/4), True Blood (3/5), Parks & Recreation (3/9), Eastbound & Down (3/10), Freaks & Geeks/Undeclared (3/11) and Glee (3/16)."

If the title of this entry didn't already give it away, and Jensen's quote wasn't clear enough, I'll lay it all out for you - I wanted to cover some of the amazing artwork being offered by Gallery 1988 in cooperation with the Paley Center for Media's PaleyFest. I'll just be reviewing the Walking Dead and True Blood posters today, but tomorrow I'll return to cover Parks & Recreation, Eastbound & Down, Freaks & Geeks and Undeclared. Now on with the show.

The Walking Dead - Daniel Danger

I missed out on this one over the weekend, and admittedly, was quite bummed. That is, until I found out some rather fantastic news (read on, read on)! Daniel Danger's The Walking Dead print captures everything that's great about Danger's style from his bleak aesthetic to his love for shadow and manipulation of light; the man likes mood. Daniel is inexplicably able to create incredibly complex environments armed with what seem like thousands of tiny hash marks. If Olly Moss is the master of minimalism, then Daniel Danger is the director of decay and disrepair, often creating something both beautiful and frightening with apocalyptic tones. My favorite detail has to be near the bottom, behind the title, where you can barely make out the roving undead. It reminds me of the elaborate stone and stained glass work that ornate houses of worship would often feature. The Walking Dead is a great television show and an even better comic book series, so for everyone who missed out on this one, I feel your pain. And as I stated earlier, while this may be sold out via the Gallery 1988 store, there's a light at the end of the tunnel - Daniel Danger has officially confirmed that he will have 100 additional posters available for purchase through his Tiny Media Empire site sometime soon. Pretty awesome, right? Danger's The Walking Dead measures 12" x 24" and is limited to an edition of 250. There's hasn't been a release date announced yet, so be sure to regularly check his website, subscribe to his mailing list and follow @TinyMediaEmpire.

True Blood - DKNG Studio

DKNG Studio's True Blood poster is pretty nuts. I haven't seen the poster in person, but it's kind of shocking to know that this is a screen print and not a high quality giclée. The detail is just astounding. If you've seen True Blood, hell, even if you haven't, you probably immediately understand the meaning of the poster. The True Blood bottle, and really the entire image, has a very dated and retro look to it - it's absolutely perfect given the setting of show. I'm not going to babble on too much longer, because unlike the Daniel Danger Walking Dead posters, these prints are actually still available through Gallery 1988, so I want to get this post up as soon as possible. DKNG Studio's True Blood poster measures 18" x 24" and costs $35. If you have any interest in these prints, I highly recommend heading over there now.
