EXCLUSIVE: Robert Wilson IV's "I Am Not Naturally Evil" Art Print

Hey folks! I'm sure you've already heard about Guzu Gallery's musically inclined "Deep Cuts" show, but on the off chance you haven't, here's the gist of it (taken from guzugallery.com):
"We asked over 20 artists to choose a beloved music icon, cult hero or legend and let his/her creativity spill to paper. There were, however, three conditions: One, the artwork must be a screen print; two, the artwork must be album cover size; and three, the artwork must cost $25. Oh yeah, and four -- the artwork must kick ass, of course. The opening reception will be Thursday, March 7th from 7 to 10pm and the artwork will remain up through April 7th. In the classic Guzu style, we will have live music on opening night to shake the walls and rattle the art."
I bet you're wishing you lived in Austin now, right? Me too. And while my wife (and available credit) has banned me from purchasing plane tickets and hotel reservations for all my wonderful readers, I do have the distinct pleasure of introducing Robert Wilson IV's Morrissey inspired "I Am Not Naturally Evil" print! Go ahead, soak up all that Mozfather cool.

But wait, there's more! I've also included a pic of the "Deep Cuts" gig poster below to further make you salivate with impatience and envy as the show's opening night grows closer. I don't mind saying, that's a pretty impressive list of artists.

Write Up: New Flesh's "Tokyo 1954" Art Print

It's been far, far, far too long since I last wrote about the going-ons of Austin-based New Flesh Prints. I lament this not only because their posters continue to grow in both complexity and beauty with every release, but because they also seem to have some sort of Vulcan mind meld with me thus ensuring their every contribution to the world of cinematically-inspired artwork speaks directly to my filmic interests and obsessions. (It's a rare but wonderful situation that has cost me more than a few shekels since they first started up shop in 2011.) Case in point: as part of Guzu Gallery's "Strange Beasts" show, the boys at New Flesh have conjured up an appropriately gorgeous piece of print that pays tribute to the awe-inspiring destruction of (a miniaturized balsa and polystyrene) Tokyo circa 1954 and the irradiated creature that represented so much more than a lumbering monster to a nation attempting to reconcile a past tragedy. Take a gander below, won't you?

"Tokyo 1954" Art Print (Regular)
N.E. (New Flesh Prints)
18" x 24" (Screen Print) - Signed and Numbered
$40 - Limited to 50
Inspired By: Godzilla (1954)

There's a lot to like about this print. First and foremost, it features the daddy of all rampaging monsters (sorry Kong, no ill will meant) in his natural habitat (i.e., crushing cities like they ain't no thang). But what really stuck with me was the actual construction of the piece. Using a muted monochromatic palette (the film's in black and white, after all), artist N.E. has delivered an exhaustive vision of chaos and devastation. From the billowing smoke and raging infernos to the heavily shadowed Godzilla standing atop the ruins of civilization, every part of this poster demands your undivided attention. It's a beautiful thing and wholly deserving of a place on your wall. Oh yeah, and do yourself a favor by picking up Criterion's amazing Blu-ray set.

"Tokyo 1954" Art Print (Variant)
N.E. (New Flesh Prints)
18" x 24" (Screen Print) - Signed and Numbered
Not for Sale
Inspired By: Godzilla (1954)

Against all odds (and human logic) there still happen to be a few copies of this spectacular print available for your consumption through their online store. "Tokyo 1945" is signed and numbered and will run you a cool $40. To learn more about the artist and studio behind this poster, visit newfleshprints.com and follow @newfleshprints and @nenewflesh on Twitter. And for those of you wishing to keep up-to-date with all future New Flesh releases, I'd also recommend signing up for their newsletter ASAP.

Best Of: Bottleneck Gallery's "More Than You Imagined" Art Show

Bottleneck Gallery's first big show, "More Than You Imagined," opened last Friday and appears to have been a smashing success. So much so, in fact, that when the prints went online the influx of folks visiting thebottleneckgallery.com crashed the site and forced Bottleneck to move to a bigger server. Well, good news, the site and storefront are now very stable and there is a ton of great artwork currently available for purchase. Today's "Best Of" post will be a little different than my usual, but I'll get to that in a second. First, I wanted to talk a little more about the show itself, starting with its premise (taken from Bottleneck Gallery's website):
"Television plays a crucial role in our lives, influencing our opinions, actions, and daily routine. It is only natural that the small screen would also influence art, linking the two through memorable stories and images. Bottle Neck Gallery has decided to embrace this connection and commission an incredible group of artists for 'More Than You Imagined: Art Inspired by Premium Cable.' This exciting and entertaining exhibit will feature work influenced by some of the most popular HBO, Showtime, and Starz programs, giving you a reason to get off of the couch."
Now that's something I can get behind. Premium cable's original programming was a turning poing in the movie vs. television argument, with shows like The Sopranos and The Wire forever changing our entertainment landscape. Below, I've included my favorite pieces from the "More Than You Imagined" exhibit that are still on sale and have broken up its contents by show and network. Have at it and let me know what you think!

Band of Brothers (HBO)

"Band of Brothers" Art Print
Paul Shipper
16" x 24" (Giclée) - Numbered
$60 - Limited to 20
Inspired By: Band of Brothers

Note: This paragraph should be read with the "Star Spangled Banner" playing softly in the background. Band of Brothers is so good, it deserves to be watched on a yearly basis (preferably sometime around the 4th of July.) Brothers makes you want to be a better person. Paul Shipper's print masterfully captures that sense of heroism and would likely make for a great gift to the war buff in your life. Shipper's Band of Brothers inspired print is available through Bottleneck Gallery for $60. To learn more about the New Zealand-based artist, head over to paulshipper.com and follow @paulshipper on Twitter.

Boardwalk Empire (HBO)

"Half A Gangster" Art Print
Kevin Justin Ang
18" x 24" (Screen Print) - Numbered
$30 - Limited to 50
Inspired By: Boardwalk Empire
"The Tin Man" Art Print
N.E. (New Flesh Prints)
18" x 24" (Screen Print) - S / N
$35 - Limited to 65
Inspired By: Boardwalk Empire

Now, I'm a bit behind in my Boardwalk Empire viewing, but I've finished the first season and can attest that the Scorsese-produced series has all the visual elements necessary to inspire some fantastic Prohibition Era artwork. Sure enough, Kevin Ang and the guys at New Flesh Prints were up to the task. Both prints beautifully highlight the show's often morally-nebulous characters with a monochromatic, but by no means nostalgic, aesthetic. "Half A Gangster" and "The Tin Man" prints are now available for $30 and $35 respectively. To learn more about Kevin, visit his deviantART page. And to learn more about New Flesh prints, I'd recommend heading over to newfleshprints.com, and following @newfleshprints and @NEnewflesh.

Carnivale (HBO)

"A Dark Heart Dwells Where Branches Meet" Art Print
Brandon Schaefer
12" x 18" (Screen Print) - Numbered
$25 - Limited to 50
Inspired By: Carnavale

I freaking loved Carnivale and was devastated when it was cancelled after only two seasons. Part period piece, part Russian nesting doll made out of mystery and enigma, Carnivale was a blast to experience and, as he's wont to do, Brandon Schaefer created a compelling and appropriately mysterious poster. "A Dark Heart Dwells Where Branches Meet" is currently available through Bottleneck Gallery's website for $25. To see more of Brandon's work, visit seekandspeak.com and follow him on Twitter @seekandspeak.

Dexter (Showtime)

"Dexter's Secret" Art Print
Tony Bui
16" x 20" (Giclée) - Signed and Numbered
$50 - Limited to 10
Note: Dexter

Tony Bui, an artist I wasn't familiar with until today, has created a fairly terrifying (and awesome) print inspired by everyone's favorite serial killer. And as a huge fan of creative typography, it doesn't get much better than a title comprised entirely out of the tools necessary for murder and / or body disposal. "Dexter's Secret" is ready to be purchased for $50. The print is limited to an edition of 10 and measures 16" x 20". I'm not 100% sure if this is the correct Tony Bui, but it may be worth checking out tonybuifanclub.com.

Eastbound & Down (HBO)

"Kenny Powers" Art Print
Zeb Love
20" x 16" (Screen Print) - Numbered
$25 - Limited to 45
Inspired By: Eastbound & Down

All I've got to say to this is, "F**k yes!" Zeb Love's Eastbound & Down inspired print is the pitch perfect (get it?) representation of Kenny Power's philosophy (and his profanity-laden audiobook.) This great looking print is still available for $25, which is a pretty unbelievable price for something this intricate. For more Zeb-related insanity, head over to zeblove.com and follow @zeb_love on Twitter.

"Flock of the Conchords" Art Print
Jesse Riggle
8" x 10" (Giclée) - Signed and Numbered
$30 - Limited to 20
Inspired By: Flight of the Conchords

Conchord's "The Most Beautiful Girl [in the Room]" still gets constant play in my household. In fact, with all this recent wedding planning nonsense, I've found that the Brett and Jemaine composed opus has been chosen as the first dance song by a decent amount of people. Believe you me, I was tempted. Thankfully, cooler heads prevailed and we decided on Tim and Eric's sublime "I Sit Down When I Pee." (Apologies for that terrible joke, folks.) Brooklyn-based artist Jesse Riggle channeled his inner Kiwi and created a gorgeous looking portrait of the two musicians in their natural habit (i.e., sheep bodies), that's a must own for any fan of the show. Riggle's "Flock of the Conchords" print is now available for only $30 through the Bottleneck website. To learn more about the artist, visit jesseriggle.com and follow @jesseAlso.

"Winter is Coming" Art Print
Marie Bergeron
27.25" x 11.25" (Giclée) - Signed and Numbered
$80 - Limited to 20
Inspired By: Game of Thrones

"Game of Musical Chairs" Art Print
Isaac Bidwell
12" x 18" (Giclée) - Numbered
$30 - Limited to 50
Inspired By: Game of Thrones
"Born to Run" Art Print
Campbell Whyte
11.75" x 16.5" (Giclée) - Numbered
$30 - Limited to 10
Inspired By: Game of Thrones

Game of Thrones seems to be the show that everyone wanted to create artwork for. And why not? It's an epic sword and (minimal) sorcery tale that feels far more realistic than you would ever think possible. In other words: there's a lot of inspiration to be had what with all the skulduggery present in the Seven Kingdoms. The three prints above ("Winter is Coming," "Game of Musical Chairs," and "Born to Run") represent a vast spectrum, with one being hilarious, another a beautiful (if barren) vista, and a third falling somewhere in between. It's that diverse creativity, which goes to show you how affecting the series can be and how brilliantly conceived the show is to warrant such dedication. "Winter is Coming," "Game of Musical Chairs," and "Born to Run" are all available through the Bottleneck Gallery storefront. To see more of about the artists, visit mariebergeron.com, isaacbidwell.com, and campbellwhyte.com.

Homeland (Showtime)

"Hero or Threat?" Art Print
Chris Garofalo
12.5" x 19" (Screen Print) - Numbered
$20 - Limited to 40
Inspired By: Homeland

Truth time: I haven't seen a single episode of Homeland ever. Don't get me wrong, I plan on changing that, but I've got a few shows higher on the priority list right now. With that said, while I may not have seen the series, I'm familiar enough with the synopsis to appreciate Chris Garofalo's inspired print. Garofalo's art often has a grimy sort of sheen over it, which lends his work a lived-in and slightly dangerous look. This approach worked for his Hellraiser poster and it works here too. The "Hero or Threat?" screen print is available through Bottleneck for only $20. For more info on the artist, please visit his Tumblr and follow @QFSChris on Twitter.

Weeds (Showtime)

"Agrestic Burning" Art Print
Joshua Budich
12" x 24" (Screen Print) - Signed and Numbered
$30 - Limited to 100
Inspired By: Weeds

I think I enjoyed Weeds more at the beginning than I did in later episodes, but I always thought the premise was great. Posterocalypse favorite Joshua Budich, with his usual skill and aplomb, has chosen to depict the community of Agrestic in all its uniform glory under the weight of a fiery and destructive ganja-related force. Overseeing all of this devastation is the Botwin family and their accountant friend Doug Wilson. Budich's "Agrestic Burning" is available through Bottleneck Gallery for $30 and is limited to an edition of 100. To see more of the artist's work, be sure to visit joshuabudich.com and follow @jbudich on Twitter.

The Wire (HBO)

"King of Baltimore" Art Print
Tim Doyle
16" x 20" (Screen Print) - Numbered
$40 - Limited to 150
Inspired By: The Wire
"The Saint of West Baltimore"
Samuel Ho
11" x 19" (Giclée) - S / N
$35 - Limited to 10
Inspired By: The Wire

"You come at the king, you best not miss..." Words to live by, no? Tim Doyle's and Samuel Ho's prints celebrate the strange and ghostlike Omar Little, both choosing to treat the character as an almost god-like presence. Truth be told, I'm shocked these haven't already sold out, because not only does the entirety of the Internet worships The Wire (myself included), but for a show so universally loved, there's a surprising lack of decent artwork available for it anywhere. Do yourself a favor and pick up one or both of these before they're all gone. You won't be sorry. The "King of Baltimore" and "The Saint of West Baltimore" prints are currently available for purchase. To learn more about Tim Doyle, be sure to visit nakatomiinc.com and follow @nakatomitim. Visit samuelho.com and follow @samuelho to see more of Samuel Ho's work.

And that's it! What were some of your favorite pieces?

Write Up: New Flesh's "No Mercy" Art Print

Every non-Gallery 1988 poster release this week is living in the shadow of the cultural behemoth better known as "Crazy 4 Cult." Depending on your daily web browsing habits, you may have already seen a ton of preview pics from the show, but this, my friends, is what you've undoubtedly been waiting for. Think back: The Last Emperor just won nine Oscars, Sonny Bono became the mayor of Palm Springs, the Soviet Army began withdrawing from Afghanistan, and a George Lucas-produced, Ron Howard-directed, Warwick Davis-starring film called Willow just opened in theaters. Oh, you were only six when that happened and don't remember any of those events? Same here. However, I do remember seeing Willow on VHS years later and having a damned good time watching Warwick Davis and company battle, evade, and ultimately overcome Queen Bavmorda and the terrifying General Kael. Friends of the site, New Flesh Prints, have created an intimidating new poster for this year's New York-based "Crazy 4 Cult" show, celebrating the skull mask-wearing, army-leading Kael in all his lethal glory. Behold!

"No Mercy" Art Print
N.E. (New Flesh Prints)
18" x 24" (Screen Print) - Signed and Numbered
Limited to 80
Inspired By: Willow

Chilling, right? As you know, I've been a huge fan of the now prolific New Flesh guys since day one and have seen their artistic offerings evolve in some amazing ways, but I think my favorite New Flesh posters have been their film inspired art prints. The art print format allows N.E. to really stretch his creative muscles, producing beautiful compositions while allowing him to play with negative space, which can be hard to do with all of the formatting that normally goes into creating a proper movie poster (e.g., film title, tagline, cast info, company credits, etc.) "No Mercy" captures the dread that General Kael exudes in the film and makes a point to show just how inseparable he and his steed were. I've learned that this print will also feature two metallic colors, so you know it's really going to pop no matter where you hang it. Finally, and I'm not sure if this was planned, but I love the fact that a print inspired by a film from 1988 is premiering at Gallery 1988 - there's a nice symmetry there.

N.E.'s "No Mercy" art print will be available at tonight's "Crazy 4 Cult" show in New York. If the print doesn't sell out at the show, the remaining inventory will be made available at gallery1988.com, so be sure to sign up for G1988's newsletter and follow @Galleries1988. To learn more about the folks behind this print, check out newfleshprints.com and follow @newfleshprints and @nenewflesh on Twitter. Good luck!

Heads Up: New Flesh's "Notorious" Movie Poster

I rewatched Charade, also known as the best Alfred Hitchcock film that Hitchcock never directed, the other day and was reminded of just how amazing / charming Cary Grant could be. Which got me thinking: I've already seen Grant in a Hitchcock-free Hitchcockian tale, why on Earth haven't I revisited the Cary Grant films that were actually directed by the Master of Suspense!? I'm talking Suspicion, To Catch a Thief, North by Northwest, and of course Notorious. Leave it to the gents at New Flesh Prints to remind me just how badly I need to see the Bergman-Grant-Hitchcock collaboration, as it's probably been a good ten years since my last viewing.

Notorious Movie Poster
N.E. (New Flesh Prints)
18" x 24" (Screen Print) - Signed and Numbered
Limited to 80

I've included the clip that inspired the poster below for your viewing pleasure. I think you'll find that N.E. really captured the scene's tension with his monochromatic design.

Makes you want to watch the film, doesn't it? Beyond some clearly exceptional artwork, N.E. was also generous enough to explain his motivations in creating the poster:
"The approach to Notorious is slightly different from the other Hitchcock prints New Flesh has done in the past. While all of the prints have been an interpretation of Hitchcock's cinematic grammar and have included matching billing blocks; this print is more of a literal visual representation of the film. The contradictory image of the key and the oversized wedding ring was too powerful to pass up. The use of tight closeups in this film are about as perfect as has ever been done and the silver quality in the B&W cinematography demanded use of metallic inks. Although less colorful and abstract than the other Hitchcock prints I feel like it represents the emotional core of the film."
New Flesh's Notorious poster will be going on sale tomorrow (8/2) through their online storefront at 10:30 AM Central. The poster measures 18" x 24", is limited to an edition of 80, and will probably cost somewhere around the $30 mark. If you haven't already, be sure to visit newfleshprints.com and subscribe to their newsletter. You can also follow the New Flesh folks on Twitter @newfleshprints and @nenewflesh.

Heads Up: New Flesh's "Casablanca" Movie Posters

"If that plane leaves the ground and you're not with him, you'll regret it. Maybe not today. Maybe not tomorrow, but soon and for the rest of your life." "Here's looking at you, kid." "Play it once, Sam. For old times' sake." "Louie, I think this is the beginning of a beautiful friendship." Recognize those lines? Even if you haven't seen the film from which they came, there's a pretty decent chance those quotes struck a familiar chord. Leave it to the crew at New Flesh Prints to remind us just how gorgeous that classic film of classic films is with these beautiful Casablanca posters by N.E.

Heads Up: New Flesh's "Mr. Smith Goes to Washington" Movie Poster

In honor of our nation's independence and in cooperation with the Kentucky Theater, N.E. of New Flesh Prints has created a monochromatic masterpiece for the film Mr. Smith Goes to Washington.

Mr. Smith Goes to Washington Movie Poster
N.E. (New Flesh Prints)
18" x 24" (Screen Print) - Signed and Numbered
Price TBD - Limited to 60

New Flesh Print's Mr. Smith Goes to Washington poster will be available on Friday (7/6) through New Flesh's store. The poster measures 18" x 24" and is limited to an edition of 60. To learn more about New Flesh Prints and the artist N.E., be sure to follow @newfleshprints and @nenewflesh.
"You see, boys forget what their country means by just reading The Land of the Free in history books. Then they get to be men they forget even more. Liberty's too precious a thing to be buried in books, Miss Saunders. Men should hold it up in front of them every single day of their lives and say: I'm free to think and to speak. My ancestors couldn't, I can, and my children will. Boys ought to grow up remembering that." - Jefferson Smith (Mr. Smith Goes to Washington)
Good luck and good night!

New Flesh's "That's a Big Twinkie" Art Print

New Flesh Prints' recent ectoplasmic entry represents yet another high point in the studio's relatively short history. Not only because N.E.'s art continues to impress, but it's also the first glow in the dark poster that New Flesh Prints has ever done.

"That's a Big Twinkie" Art Print (Glow in the Dark Edition)

New Flesh's "Special Order 937" Art Prints

Are you as excited about Prometheus as I am? While I've read several reviews suggesting it may not in fact be the greatest film ever made, I'm still holding out hope. Ultimately, whether I love the movie or not, I can at least thank Ridley Scott's latest for prompting me to revisit the original 1979 Alien. It's been a while since I've seen the film, and the upcoming Prometheus was just the kick in the pants I needed. Which leads me to tonight's posters. I present, for your viewing pleasure, N.E.'s jaw-dropping "Special Order 937."

"Special Order 937" Art Print (Regular)
N.E. (New Flesh Prints)
18" x 24" (Screen Print) - Signed and Numbered
$25 - Limited to 75
Inspired By: Alien

I'm starting to sound like a broken record at this point, but this is truly the best work I've ever seen from N.E. and New Flesh Prints. I am completely convinced this could just as easily have been something offered by Mondo - it's that good. N.E.'s skill and style continue to evolve, and the man is showing no signs of slowing down. Besides completely nailing the design of the astronauts' suits in Alien, the artist has filled just about every nook and cranny on the page with a variety of textures. Whether it be dust, steam or smoke, these prints very cleverly manage to make even the vastness of space look genuinely suffocating and not terribly inviting - something the film also does magnificently. And much like yesterday's Warriors poster by Brandon Schaefer, "Special Order 937" doesn't go the obvious route and simply recreate the menacing Xenomorph in vivid, disgusting detail. Nope. Instead we're presented with a beautiful, but grimy landscape that's as much Alien as, well, the aliens. I have a sneaking suspicion these posters will be showing up in my annual "Best of Year" post.

"Special Order 937" Art Print (Variant)
N.E. (New Flesh Prints)
18" x 24" (Screen Print) - Signed and Numbered
Sold Out - Limited to 15
Inspired By: Alien

N.E. on his motivations and concept:
"The concept behind 'Special Order 937' was to capture the sense of the unknown in space. I find the sheer volume of emptiness in space to be overwhelming. Now apply that to a planet's surface that is very chaotic and atmospheric with only the safety given to you by your space suit. I wanted to express this with mostly negative space. The texture gives a sense of depth and movement while the clean lines of the space suits give the impression of isolation in the midst of chaos."
N.E.'s "Special Order 937" art print will be available on Friday (6/1) at 10 AM CST. The variant is already sold out, but there will be a regular version available for $25, which is a total steal! The poster measures 18" x 24" and is limited to an edition of 75. To keep up on all things New Flesh Prints, be sure to follow @newfleshprints and @NEnewflesh on Twitter, sign up for the newsletter, and visit newfleshprints.com obsessively. Good luck folks!

New Flesh's "I Am Iron Man" Art Print

I'm not sure if anyone has heard (they've been keeping it pretty hush-hush), but there's a little film called The Avengers opening nation-wide tomorrow (5/4). "Hold your horses," you frantically exclaim. "How have I not heard anything about this moving picture?!" I know, I know, I was as shocked as you, maybe even more so, but we've got to accept that a film the majority of us have been looking forward to for the last several years is finally coming to the big screen on Friday, and that's not all. Gallery 1988 will be hosting an Avenger inspired art show titled "Assemble," and it's opening in a few hours! But wait! There's more! New Flesh Prints, a Posterocalypse favorite, will be featured in tonight's exhibit (their first Gallery 1988 show no less) and have created a jaw-dropping poster honoring America's most charming alcoholic superhero (and no, I'm not talking about Hancock), Iron Man! Check it out below and head over to the always excellent Crome Yellow for a great write up and some words from the artist.

"I Am Iron Man" Art Print
N.E. (New Flesh Prints)
18" x 24" - Limited to 175
$45 - Numbered
Inspired By: The Avengers

N.E.'s "I Am Iron Man" print stands as his best work to date, and it's becoming quite clear that with every new release N.E. has no problem with changing and evolving his style. This poster is just so damn dynamic! No matter where you look there's something going on. Whether it's the rubble, fire and smoke, or a dude with rocket boots flying directly into your face, N.E. has crafted something that will instantly make any wall exponentially more cool and exciting. With that said, the artist knew exactly where everyone would be staring and has poured so much detail into Iron Man's armor, you can practically smell the smoke still rising from each singed fragment of fire-blasted metal. If "I Am Iron Man" is any indication of what we can expect from the folks at New Flesh, I think we'll be seeing a lot more of their work at Gallery 1988 and have a much trickier time purchasing their prints.

New Flesh's "I Am Iron Man" poster will be available for $45 at Gallery 1988's "Assemble" show later tonight and will (hopefully) be available through their site in the coming days. The poster measures 18" x 24" and is limited to an edition of 175. If you'd like to learn more about the fine folks at New Flesh, you've got quite a few options, including: newfleshprints.com, @newfleshprints and @NEnewflesh on Twitter, and I think there might even be a Facebook page and storefront. Long live the New Flesh!

New Flesh Prints' "Why I'm Quitting Tobacco" Art Prints

Truth time: I'm one of the unwashed masses that hasn't seen much of the critically acclaimed Mad Men. Now hear me out: I bought the first three seasons on Blu-ray last Black Friday with the full intention of immediately jumping into series, but then other things got in the way. Other things, like Breaking Bad, a Criterion Collection sale, Skyrim, misplacing the first three seasons of Mad Men...you know, stuff. But whether I'm well versed in the comings and goings of Don Draper or not, I know when I see something I like. And I really like New Flesh's gorgeous new Mad Men inspired prints by artist N.E.

"Why I'm Quitting Tobacco" Art Print (Regular)
N.E. (New Flesh Prints)
18" x 24" - Signed and Numbered
$25 - Limited to 50

I was immediately reminded of Martin Ansin, my absolute favorite artist, when I first saw N.E.'s depiction of Draper, and that's a pretty great thing from where I'm standing. His construction of Don's body isn't just an amalgam of hard angles, instead, we see a man made up of complicated curved lines (some thick, some thin) that suggests something organic, something imperfect, something real. But there's more to these prints than just amazing artwork. I'm not sure whose idea this was, but whoever's to blame should be awarded the screen printing version of the Oscar. The idea in question? The variant was printed on authentic tabacco company blue-prints / schematics. Pretty great, right? I'm not even sure where you would get something like that. It's an inspired idea and, in the spirit of complete resentment, I'd like to offer a hearty "damn you" to the handful of people who were able to grab one before it sold out.

New Flesh's "Birds" and "Rear Window" Movie Posters

It's been a really impressive few months for New Flesh in my estimation. The Austin-based design studio, screen printing house and organizer of guerrilla movie screenings, has already built up an exceptional body of work and and is showing no signs of slowing down. Working in collaboration with the Blue Starlite Drive-in, New Flesh has created two beautiful posters in tribute to Alfred Hitchcock's The Birds and Rear Window.

The Birds Movie Poster - N.E.
18" x 24" - Signed and Numbered
$25 - Limited to 50

I've loved everything New Flesh has released so far, but I think it's safe to say that they've reached new heights with the double feature Hitchcock prints. N.E.'s Birds poster features detail aplenty with its intricately shaped Bodega Bay topography, comprised of what looks to be some pretty intense cross hatching and shadowing. But as is usually the case, it's the little things that really tend to drive me wild (in a good way, of course) when it comes to movie artwork. I'm talking about the bird-lined power lines. I didn't immediately catch it when I first saw the poster, partially because it's so minute and there's so many other things to look at, but the fact that it's there totally ups my appreciation of this wonderful print. This is also something I'll be repeating later in the post, but I love the color palette N.E. decided on - it really captures that by-the-bay backdrop.

Artist N.E. from New Flesh was nice enough to provide some insight on what he was trying to accomplish with his Birds design:
"I wanted to do something that I had not seen before for either one of the movies. I knew I wanted to make something for The Birds that recalled the travel posters from the 50's and 60's. I like the idea of having the birds be a subtle element of the poster that surfaces when you look closely at the image."
The Birds poster will be available through the New Flesh store on Monday (1/16) at 10:30 AM CST. The poster measures 18" x 24", is limited to an edition of 50 and will cost $25. Rear Window Movie Poster - N.E.
18" x 24" - Signed and Numbered
$25 - Limited to 50

Out of the two Hitchcock prints, I think this may be my favorite. N.E.'s poster marks a pretty thrilling scene in Rear Window when the wheelchair-bound Jeff (James Stewart) uses a camera's flash to temporary blind the home-invading Lars Thorwald (Raymond Burr). And in my opinion, this heart-pounding moment comes through spectacularly unscathed due to the artist's use of feverish color and a more stark, but dynamic, design - both elements running somewhat contrary to what was done with The Birds print. The success of N.E.'s color choice is two-fold, really: not only do they reflect what someone might see in the aftermath of a bulb's flash, but they're also spot on with what are widely considered Hitchcock's "warning colors" - yellow, orange and red. I'm really excited to see New Flesh consistently raise the stakes and will definitely be making a poster purchase come Monday (1/16).

Artist N.E. from New Flesh on his Rear Window poster design, and some Star Wars related trivia I had absolutely zero knowledge of:
"For Rear Window the options are always slightly limited, just because it's about a man in his room confined to a wheelchair with a telephoto lens. I love how Hitchcock uses effects to simulate point of view. In Vertigo it was the push / pull camera trick. In Rear Window it was the blinding light that was simulated when Raymond Burr confronts James Stewart. That image has been "burned" in my head (pun intended) since I first saw the film. The red / orange / yellow color scheme came from this camera flash. (Side note: the camera flash that James Stewart used in Rear Window was the main part they used for making the hilts for lightsabers in Star Wars. So technically James Stewart uses a lightsaber to defend himself in the movie. Or you could say Darth Vader uses a camera flash in Star Wars.)"
N.E. on the poster set as a whole:
"For the Hitchcock posters it was important that they were similar enough that they could be in a set and potentially a series. I also wanted the technique and the color to be completely different or opposite from the each other. This is where the blue green / dark blue / blue for The Birds came from. Both posters are very impressionistic compared to most of my other posters. The goal was to convey mood or a feeling more then just illustrate an image from the movie."
Much like The Birds print, N.E.'s Rear Window poster will be available through the New Flesh store on Monday at 10:30 AM CST. The print measures 18" x 24", will cost $25 and is limited to an edition of 50.
