Reason #992 I'm Bummed I'm Not at Comic-Con: Mark Englert's "You Are My Lucky Star" Art Print

I went to San Diego last year for Comic-Con and proceeded to purchase tons of art with money I didn't have. Don't get me wrong, I love the posters I bought, but I definitely had a case of whiplash after checking out my monthly bank statement when I got home. In an effort to stave off financial ruin I abstained from Comic Con this year, but you can bet I'm still super bummed I couldn't make it for a number of reasons. New Flesh's "Special Order 937" Art Prints

Are you as excited about Prometheus as I am? While I've read several reviews suggesting it may not in fact be the greatest film ever made, I'm still holding out hope. Ultimately, whether I love the movie or not, I can at least thank Ridley Scott's latest for prompting me to revisit the original 1979 Alien. It's been a while since I've seen the film, and the upcoming Prometheus was just the kick in the pants I needed. Which leads me to tonight's posters. I present, for your viewing pleasure, N.E.'s jaw-dropping "Special Order 937."

I'm starting to sound like a broken record at this point, but this is truly the best work I've ever seen from N.E. and New Flesh Prints. I am completely convinced this could just as easily have been something offered by Mondo - it's that good. N.E.'s skill and style continue to evolve, and the man is showing no signs of slowing down. Besides completely nailing the design of the astronauts' suits in Alien, the artist has filled just about every nook and cranny on the page with a variety of textures. Whether it be dust, steam or smoke, these prints very cleverly manage to make even the vastness of space look genuinely suffocating and not terribly inviting - something the film also does magnificently. And much like yesterday's Warriors poster by Brandon Schaefer, "Special Order 937" doesn't go the obvious route and simply recreate the menacing Xenomorph in vivid, disgusting detail. Nope. Instead we're presented with a beautiful, but grimy landscape that's as much Alien as, well, the aliens. I have a sneaking suspicion these posters will be showing up in my annual "Best of Year" post.

"The concept behind 'Special Order 937' was to capture the sense of the unknown in space. I find the sheer volume of emptiness in space to be overwhelming. Now apply that to a planet's surface that is very chaotic and atmospheric with only the safety given to you by your space suit. I wanted to express this with mostly negative space. The texture gives a sense of depth and movement while the clean lines of the space suits give the impression of isolation in the midst of chaos."

Randy Ortiz's "Lord Necronom" Art Print

I like to think of Randy's "Lord Necronom" as the art print inspired by the film I never knew I was dying to see. To rewind a bit, I first mentioned Mr. Ortiz in my write up of Spoke Art's second annual "Bad Dads" art show because of his beautiful Fantastic Mr. Fox inspired poster, which then made its way onto my "Best Twenty Posters of 2011" list. I think it's safe to say that tonight's entry is not nearly as cute or cuddly as the wily Mr. Fox, but what it's lacking in adorableness, it more than makes up for in disgusting phallic tendrils and xenomorphic complexity.

I enjoy Star Wars as much the next guy, but I've seen enough paintings and posters of Darth Vader to last me a lifetime. With that said, I think the reason this particular remixing of the iconic Vader helmet works is because it feels fresh and it's just plain clever. I like clever. And if there was ever something that could make the Dark Lord of the Sith a more sinister individual overall, it would without a doubt be the incorporation of some Giger inspired creepiness. Not content with his already unsettling creation, Ortiz also saw fit to include a grotesque halo in the background, which somehow makes the print even more irreverent. My favorite elements of Randy's poster are the rib cage forming the top of the Lord Necronom's hard hat, the ghoulish little mouth jutting out of Necronom's face, and what are possibly the most terrifying eyelids ever thought up by anyone...ever. Ultimately, "Lord Necronom" makes my skin crawl, but then again, that's why I like it so much. In lieu of not be able to watch Prometheus yet, I think I may have to throw in Alien tonight.

Randy Ortiz's "Lord Necronom" prints will be available on Friday (3/23) at a random time through his online storefront. The poster costs $70 and measures 18" x 24", with only 17 being made available for purchase (these are his APs). Happy New Year everyone! To start off 2012 right I've decided to make today a giveaway day! Huzzah! I was toying with the idea of giving this print away closer to the release of Ridley Scott's Prometheus (synergy and whatnot), but I'm just too damn excited to hold Dale Peart's poster back AND the longer it stays at my house, the more likely I am to keep it all for myself. I wrote about this print in December and from the looks of it a few are still available for purchase. Dale Peart's Turner Classic Movie Prints

If you've been collecting movie art prints for any length of time, you've probably noticed the recent trend (and by "recent" I really mean the last two years) of artists favoring minimalist film posters. It makes sense, doesn't it? Minimalist designs don't theoretically take all that long to complete or require many resources to create (again, theoretically), and can often be a great platform to exhibit one's intellectual prowess. That's not a condemnation or promotion of minimalism, that's just my way of saying it's popular - really popular. And since I've seen so many great minimalist designs already, a poster really needs to be better than great for me to take notice. In my opinion, Dale Peart's three Turner Classic Movie ("TCM") prints rise above the crowd, because not only do they beautifully celebrate some fantastic films, they also share a thoughtful design philosophy that's both clever and comments on the movies they seek to commemorate.

If you've looked at all three posters, I'm sure you immediately noticed that there were some similar visual elements repeated in each design. Here's what Dale had to say about his overarching approach to the TCM prints (every quote in this post was merrily lifted from his blog):

"I decided that each of my films must link visually, each must link with their idea, but they also must sum up the main message of the film, or what the film is about. Without these, the posters wouldn't succeed as a representation of the film or as a set.

I spent some time deliberating how to link all these posters together. I did so not only with the idea, but also visually. After analysing all three films, noting down important and iconic moments within each and what was the underlying message behind them all. It became apparent the main theme / subject of each, was about something or someone hiding, or chasing."

Color me impressed. I really like that interpretation and can honestly say I've never thought to group Alien, Eternal Sunshine of a Spotless Mind, and No Country for Old Men together before.

I'll start with my favorite of the set, Alien. I remember seeing this image on Tumblr a while back and really digging it, but I wasn't aware this could actually be purchased, figuring it was just concept art or something TCM had featured on their website. The following is how Mr. Peart described his inspiration:

"Ripley sets a self destruct sequence blowing up the Nostromo and seemingly wiping out the Alien in a visually spectacular explosion. Not all is as it seems though and the Alien is perfectly hidden amongst the architecture of Ripley's escape pod. Giger's design works at its finest during this scene to create one of the ultimate shock scenes in film history. I abstracted what the architecture of the pipes looked like and visually represented it using this single line, which the alien can hide within."

I remember that scene well and the idea of a predatory Alien (not the Predator) hiding in a worn, dirt-caked spaceship is wonderfully recreated here. And fear not Giger enthusiasts, even this stripped down version of the Xenomorph has retained its iconic phallic shape. Dale's Alien poster measures 16.5" x 23.4" and costs £16 (approximately $25). I remember watching this film in theaters and being blown away by the creativity on screen, cementing in me a lifelong admiration for Michel Gondry and Charlie Kaufman. Dale Peart's Eternal Sunshine poster elegantly visualizes Joel's (played by Jim Carey) struggle to retain his memory and ensure he never forgets his lively Clementine (played by Kate Winslet). Finally, we arrive at No Country for Old Men. This modern-day classic brought to life one of the most frightening characters to ever grace the silver screen, Anton Chigurh. Peart's print admirably immortalizes Chigurh's ingenious and terrifyingly mundane tool of death, the cattle gun. But beyond shaping Anton's weapon of choice, the vertical lines also call to mind the suburban picket fence slats in the film's final scene and setting. Then again, I might be reaching on that one. Rhys Cooper's Garbage Pail Kids Prints

I wasn't sure what to tackle tonight, but when I saw Rhys Cooper's Garbage Pail Kids ("GPK") prints last week I knew I'd have to write about them at some point, and now seems as good a time as any. The reason these posters appeal to me so much is because not only do they carry on the proud (and gross) legacy of the GPK trading cards, they also happen to feature some great film references. I thought tonight I'd go over a few of my favorite Rhys Cooper prints created for Gallery 1988's GPK show. Note: All of the posters included here are still available for purchase as of the writing of this post.

Cooper's Robocop-inspired GPK print is bat-shit crazy (in a good way). Imagine a futuristic Detroit where, instead of an efficient cyborg patrolman policing the mean streets, a snot-nosed kid comprised of metallic bits and baubles and armed with a fork and firearm prowled the Motor City burning it to the ground and leaking oil all the while. Scary, isn't it? Rhys' "2nd Hand Rob" print is available for $25 through the Gallery 1988 website. The print measures 12" x 18" and is limited to an edition of 100. I'd also like to point out that all of these posters are screen prints, so it goes without saying that they're beautifully detailed in person.

The "Allen Hunter" print is about as insane as "2nd Hand Rob" and is based on a character that's just as recognizable as Robocop. This one wasn't a hard sell for me, as I'm interested in just about anything Predator or Alien related. My favorite touch has to be that, in addition to simply sporting a necklace made up of "trophies" from his deceased victims, Allen Hunter also has a pacifier attached. Wait, does that mean he killed another Garbage Pail Kid? Makes sense. "Allen Hunter" measures 12" x 18, is limited to an edition of 100 and is available through Gallery 1988 for a measly $25.

I briefly mentioned Alien in the previous paragraph, so this seemed like the logical next step. This print is just creepy. Rhys' "Chester Burst" takes our favorite little chest bursting xenomorph and somehow grafts a pudgy child on top of it with very disturbing results. It's not bad enough that this abomination's freakish arms and legs seem to jut out without any rhyme or reason, but did the artist have to distort Chester's face like that? It's for this reason that I am both sickened and enamored by this poster. Like all the prints in this post "Chester Burst" is available through the Gallery 1988 storefront and costs $25. Go get it!

I think these last two may be my favorite. Cooper managed to meld the sophisticated horror and absurdity of Stanley Kubrick's The Shining and A Clockwork Orange with the potty humor crassness of the Garbage Pail Kids. I guess it's not that huge a stretch since Art Spiegelman, the man behind the comic memoir Maus, also known as the only comic book to ever be honored with a Pulitzer Prize, is the genius who originally thought up the GPK while working at Topps (my brain exploded when I learned that). "Dull Boyde" and "Ultra Vincent" exemplify the fun that can be had when merging pop-culture and repurposing iconic imagery. And I love how Rhys has managed to recreate so much of what was special about the GPK, down to the "Peel Here" arrow and the dashes that outline the sticker boundary. These are great! "Dull Boyde" and "Ultra Vincent" are currently available through the Gallery 1988 website for $25 apiece. Both posters measure 12" x 18" and are limited to an edition of 100.

Alex Pardee's "My Favorite Monsters" Prints Part 1

I was going to call this post "My Favorite 'My Favorite Monsters'," but that seemed a bit confusing, so in place of a perplexing title I figured I would sum up, as quickly as I can, tonight's write-up.

A little more than a year ago, Alex Pardee started releasing small prints that featured some of his favorite cinematic baddies, calling the collection "My Favorite Monsters." These were open edition (meaning they're not limited) 5" x 7" prints made with archival inks and were very affordable. Fast forward to this year's Comic-con and me aimlessly walking the convention center floor when, like a body of water in a desert, I see Pardee's Zero Friends booth and immediately commenced spending quite a bit on Alex's wonderfully monstrous creations (i.e. I bought a bunch). I've purchased way more of his "My Favorite Monsters" collection than I'm willing to talk about in just one post (it would be a massive post), but I've decided that every once in a while I'll take a moment to shine a light on some of my favorite "My Favorite Monsters." Are you as confused as I am?

I thought I might go with the alien theme tonight, and where better to start than the alien from Alien? The thing I really like about these prints, beside the fact that they're spectacularly affordable and kind of awesome in every conceivable way, is the slightly quick, slightly messy watercolor aesthetic Pardee goes for here. I'm also partial to the way in which the artist combines the more detailed parts of the alien   (the Russian nesting mouthing) with the less defined portions of the body (everything else). I love Attack the Block! It is, without question, my favorite film this year (so far, at least), and it appears that Alex Pardee liked the film quite a bit as well. So much so, in fact, that he created this print in honor of the badass extraterrestrial creatures from the film. Absolutely brilliant stuff! I've ordered two of these (one for hanging, the other for safekeeping) and can't wait to get them in the mail. Let's finish this post up with 80s action icon and sworn enemy of Arnold Schwarzenegger (sorry T-1000, you've got nothing on this guy). Yes, that's right the Predator. Unlike Pardee's "ALIEN" and "Gorilla Wolf" print, his "PREDATOR" print has a lot more fine detail - which really accentuates all of his dangerous hunting gear and armor.
