Tom Whalen and Dark Hall Mansion have joined forces to create something that's sure to make you feel all warm and gooey inside. Hear me out: I know there's no empirical data to back this statement up, but I'm fairly certain that owning this poster and placing it on a wall in your home will make you a better, happier person. Again, I don't have any proof that substantiates my theory, but I just don't see how it's possible to be sad around something this full of joy. Also, Whalen absolutely nailed it...again.

Tom Whalen's "Yellow Submarine" Art Prints

You may remember Dark Hall Mansion as the company behind Laurent Durieux's insanely gorgeous Gigantor prints. Well, it seems the folks at Dark Hall are it again, this time teaming up with the incomparable Tom Whalen to tackle The Beatles' animated classic Yellow Submarine. I'm not entirely sure how they managed to work out a deal with Live Nation Merchandise (The Beatles’ North American Licensing Agent) and Apple Corps Ltd. (the conglomerate formed by The Beatles), because it certainly couldn't have been easy, but thank goodness they did. As you can see below, everything turned out wonderfully.

Tom's meticulously designed posters perfectly capture the kooky and deliriously twisted tone of the film. I'm not sure why Whalen's art works so well with animated content, but there's no doubt that it does. Maybe it's his illustration style, which seems to favor perfectly round edges, a sometimes unnatural symmetry, and a preference for solid shapes over textured halftones. Then again, maybe the memory of all the Disney posters he did for Mondo has somehow found its way into my brain and is now inextricably linked to his name. Whatever the case may be, this is definitely a win for Whalen and a victory for anyone who appreciates great art and psychedelic animation. I should also mention the wonderful color palettes employed by all three versions of the Yellow Submarine print folios. I often find that variants, while usually more collectible than their standard version counterpart, are almost always without fail the uglier choice of the bunch because of their jarring and often limited range of color. These posters, on the other hand, all seem appropriately eye-popping in the color department and appear to be in line with the film. All in all, Tom Whalen has created another beautiful body of work, though I am looking forward to seeing more live-action inspired stuff from him in the near future. Seriously, I'd love to see Tom tackle some horror movie stuff for Mondo. I think his style set against a really disturbing story / cast of characters would be brilliant! I can already picture his version of Pennywise from It!

Tom Whalen's "Toy Story" Movie Poster

Not that I'm complaining, but it's almost overwhelming how many posters Mondo is releasing nowadays. Concluding his excellent series of Disney-centric prints, Tom Whalen has created an impressive and jam-packed work of art honoring Pixar's first bona fide hit that's sure to please any fan of Woody, Buzz and their toy box crew.

Whalen's clean and immaculately constructed poster perfectly compliments Toy Story's super polished look. And wow, he managed to fit just about every character in this thing. Speaking of, I would have loved to have seen a variant featuring all of the DIY creepy toys! It was Toy Story that featured the doll's head erector set spider, wasn't it? While I haven't been crazy about all of Whalen's Disney stuff, I think this is a damn fine print and some of his best work yet (although his recent Black Keys gig poster may be my all time favorite Whalen). Here's what Tom had to say about his Toy Story artwork (taken from strongstuff.net):

"My goal here was to capture the awe and wonder that swept all of the toys in Andy's room (with the notable exception of Woody) when Buzz arrived on the scene. At any rate, I think it's only fitting that this poster series ends with the first Pixar film, which unbelievably, was released all the way back in 1995."

Jay Shaw's "Bullhead" Movie Poster

When I think back to 2010, the emergence of artist Olly Moss comes to mind. His ability to make a clever minimalist design out of pretty much anything was, and still is, incredibly impressive and stood in stark contrast to the bursting-with-detail artwork of Tyler Stout and Martin Ansin. Well, I may be a bit presumptuous in saying this, but I feel like 2012 will definitely be the year that Jay Shaw (AKA Iron Jaiden) hits in a big, big way. Don't believe me? Take a look at his amazing poster for Drafthouse Films' Bullhead below.

Not only is Jay a clearly talented artist, his work thus far has shown a remarkably deep knowledge of art and film history. He created a loving tribute to the Blaxploitation gem The Spook Who Sat by the Door for Cinema Overdrive. He crafted a retro and surreal print for Drafthouse Films' Comin' At Ya! 3D and now he's channeled the strange and dreamlike style that has long been the trademark of Polish poster art for the film Bullhead. There's already been a great article written on this print at HitFix, but I did want to briefly talk about my take on Shaw's work and the movie itself. I remember seeing Bullhead at last year's Fantastic Fest and being completely blown away. Bullhead isn't a thrill-a-minute action film, it's a thoroughly contemplative story about Matthias Schoenaerts' hormone-injecting (in more ways than one) Jacky Vanmarsenille and his attempt to negotiate his personal and professional demons. He's a flawed-man who's had to deal with some very intense and personal traumas of both the physical and psychological variety. I probably couldn't be any vaguer, could I? Due to these issues, there are many scenes where he's on the precipice of full-on rage, much like a bull ready to gore its agitator. See where I'm going with this? Jay has captured the animalistic nature of both the man and his chosen line of work with pitch-perfect execution. The desolate background behind the hoofed man, whose body has been partially transformed into that of a beast, only further echoes the harsh world Jacky, the film's lead, tries to survive in. My final take: great poster, killer typography, and a beautiful fusion of new and old.

If you've been coming to Posterocalypse for any length of time, you've probably noticed that I review posters, sometimes at great length, in addition to providing their corresponding pricing, availability and edition info; this is both good and bad. On the one hand, this gives me time to wax philosophic about my love of poster design and steadily increase my dependence on sites like thesaurus.com and IMDb. On the other hand, I spend so much time writing my posts (keep in mind I have a full-time job outside of Posterocalypse) that I often don't have time to promote other prints or posters that I feel deserve the same level of love and affection - and that's exactly what I plan on remedying with my "Art Appreciation" column.

Mondo's "Cowboys & Aliens" Movie Posters

I've read some disappointing things about Favreau's latest film, but I'm hoping for the best and I'm still pretty excited. No matter how the film turns out, one thing's for sure: the movie will be sporting some fantastic artwork thanks to Mondo and four very talented artists.

This was one of the many posters that were released at SDCC, and it's positively brilliant in person (I totally grabbed one). I don't know too much about the film's story other than its titular premise, but the poster seems to suggest that humans are being abducted from the streets via airborne cables (kind of creepy). I only bring that up because, except for the title of the film, it looks like Danger favored the western aspects of the movie over the alien elements and I'm the happier for it. And by working primarily with several variations of the color blue he's really captured that nocturnal apprehension we've all experienced before - that moment sometime between twilight and complete darkness when things go bump in the night (whether they're actually there or not). I wrote the majority of this post before I read the the LA Times piece on these prints, but I thought this quote from Danger was very informative about his approach when creating this poster (gleefully pilfered from the LA Times' article, "Cowboys & Aliens Gets Mondo Poster Treatment"):

"In this case, I’ve been playing with a reoccurring motif of ghosts and spirits floating above old houses for years, so when I saw the scenes where citizens of the town are yanked into the air by the alien cables, I knew I could use that narrative element to create an image that’s specific and iconic to the movie, but also feels like a piece I would have created myself. I didn’t want the spacecraft to be terribly prominent, so I used just glimpses of lights and beams to show their presence…but between that and the cables, it’s just enough to show that whats going on here is out of place in a traditional western."

I've never heard of Janée Meadows before, but I'm starting to realize that that was a serious gap in my (decidedly limited) artistic education. This poster is wonderful to stare at and perfectly straddles the line between weird science fiction and badass gunslinger western. Just looking at this print makes me long for a glass of water as the arid yellow tones immediately evoke an inhospital desert heat. I'm not sure whether the previously mentioned Danger poster or this one is my favorite, but I'm thinking I might try for Janée's print come morning (tomorrow morning to be precise). Janée Meadows' Cowboys & Aliens poster is limited to 170, will cost $35 and measures 18" x 24". I don't usually bring up the price of the poster until the very end of my review, but wow, this is a steal at $35. Think about it, Tom's poster measures 24" x 36" and only costs $35. Sorry, I just had to mention that at outset of this write-up. I really dig Whalen's layout here. The way the figures are arranged starting small in the lower right-hand corner of the canvas and as you move upward and to the left getting larger and larger - it reminds me of a classic Struzan one sheet, but with Whalen's more minimal and very distinct aesthetic. And again with the sun. Both Meadows' and Whalen's posters really nail the tangibly blistering locales from the film, and more precisely, from pretty much every western ever made. Since I normally don't have artist quotes to play around with, you'll have to forgive me if I'm being over indulgent. Tom Whalen on his motivations and methods for creating the Cowboys & Aliens poster (rudely lifted from LA Times' "Cowboys & Aliens Gets Mondo Poster Treatment"):

"The seed for this poster was planted while reading an interview with Jon Favreau during the movie’s production. I was excited when I heard that he intended it to play as a straight western… that just happened to have aliens in it. When I received the assignment to design a poster for the film, I remembered that intent and wanted to channel some of the incredible spaghetti western poster design that graced movie theaters in the 1960s. Much like the tone of the film itself, I wanted my design to read as a western poster first and let the alien references throughout slowly reveal it to be something much more."

With the "Crazy 4 Cult 5" show only a few days away now, I think it's safe to say the Internet is in full on excitement / hysteria mode. In an attempt to add fuel to the fire, I wanted to go over some of my favorite pieces I've seen previewed so far. The vast majority, if not all of the images in this post, were found at /FILM. These will all be available during the show's premiere on Friday (7/8) night, and who knows, maybe a few will be available after, either through Gallery 1988's site or the artist's.

"Crazy 4 Cult 5: I'm Too Old for This Shit" Show Poster

I thought I'd start with the show poster itself. I think this may be my favorite "Crazy 4 Cult" poster yet, although Mike Mitchell's print from last year was pretty great as well. The thing I like most about these images, besides the crazy amount of skill involved, is the sheer quantity of movie characters present. I mean, you've got Jason, Freddy, Robocop, It, the Fly - there's just so much going on. The planning it must take to get so much content onto such a small canvas always impresses me. This poster will definitely be available at the show, and very likely after the show on Gallery 1988's website gallery1988.com. Fight Club Movie Poster

Joshua Budich has completed yet another killer poster, this time for the 1999 classic Fight Club. This poster is perfect in all the right ways and includes some fantastic little details from the film (e.g., the in-flight safety card, the narrator's power animal, and of course the "Bob" name tag). I'm not sure if this, his O Brother poster, or his Pulp Fiction poster is my favorite, but I can say without any uncertainty that this is one of his best and is sure to sell out quickly. Joshua Budich's Fight Club poster measures 24" x 36" and is limited to an edition of 100. The poster will be available for purchase at the show on Friday (7/8), but a few will also be available through Joshua's website after the show. I guess I can't really be shocked; it does have the word "cult" in the title of the show after all. If you haven't seen this movie, please stream or buy it right this second. Rubber is bizarre, clever, and most importantly a fun deconstruction of cinema's language. Oh yeah, and it's about a sentient, telekinetic tire named Robert who can explode people - that too.  I know this sort of artwork probably has a rather small target audience, but I pray that this will be a print (rather than a one off) and I'll be able to get it online at some point after the show. For me, this is essentially a picture of an action figure from the 1980s I never knew I wanted. Andrew DeGraff's They Live art print is awesome and hilarious in equal parts, much like John Carpenter's 1988 film. Our favorite bubblegum chewing, ass kicking hero, George Nada, is sporting both the "Rowdy" Roddy Piper-approved kilt and the formaldehyde face visage - some may say fashion faux pas, I say brilliant! Finally, we come to Tom Whalen's amazing Shining-inspired print, titled "Room 237." It's not a "Crazy 4 Cult" show unless there's at least one piece of awesome artwork based on a Stanley Kubrick film. Whalen brings his characteristically clean lines to this print, but there's also a sense of chaos and asymmetry in the design, at least more so than in his previous work. I especially enjoy the barely visible typing that seems to be hiding just beyond your vision. Tom Whalen's "Room 237" print will measure 16.9" x 22.5" and will be limited to an edition of 80. Tom Whalen's "Who Framed Roger Rabbit" Movie Poster

I promise this isn't becoming a Mondo blog, but I did want to briefly write up Tom Whalen's fun Who Framed Roger Rabbit poster. I'd previously written about Whalen's Steamboat Willie and Paul posters, but I honestly think this print trumps both of those.

Who Framed Roger Rabbit

Who Framed Roger Rabbit is one of those movies that I loved as a kid, and then re-watched as an adult and was totally floored by how much had gone over my head in the 80's; the film has something for everyone. I love all of Tom's smaller touches that don't immediately hit you until you look a little closer, like the anthropomorphized buildings in the background and the dripping ink of Judge Doom's glove. With that said, I wish Bob Hoskins had played a bigger role in the design instead of just a thumbnail in the lower left corner, however I appreciate Tom trying to keep the poster simple and clean. All in all this looks to be a fantastic poster and would be a feather in one's cap (did I really just use the term "a feather in one's cap"?) for anyone who's a fan of the film, animation, or the filmography of Robert Zemeckis (before he started working exclusively with all that motion capture nonsense, that is).

Whalen's Who Framed Roger Rabbit poster will be available at a random time tomorrow (4/8) through Mondo. Their drops usually happen around 9 AM Pacific, but the Tyler Stout Kill Bill poster dropped at around 8:30 earlier this week, so anywhere between 8:30 and 9 would probably be a safe bet (of course I could always be wrong).
