Jay Shaw & Tyler Stout's "Repo Man" Posters

It finally happened. My two obsessions, the Criterion Collection and Mondo, have collided to make sweet, sweet venn diagram love, and from their loins has come the following prints. Amazing! Just amazing!

Repo Man Movie Poster
Tyler Stout
18" x 24" (Screen Print) - Numbered
Regular - $45 - Limited to 510
GID Variant - $65 - Limited to 220

I'm going to keep this short, because I've got to wake up in time to actually grab these prints in the morning. I'm guessing everyone has already seen the amazing Shaw print, so I decided to lead with the Stout's jaw-dropping design. Stout's Repo Man artwork will be available on Tuesday (4/16) at a random time through Mondo for $45 or $65, depending on which version you go for. Both the regular edition and the glow in the dark variant measure 18" x 24" and are hand-numbered. For more Tyler Stout news, visit tstout.com.

Repo Man Movie Poster
Jay Shaw
18" x 24" (Screen Print) - Numbered
$45 - Limited to 195

The above image is probably what you've grown accustomed to seeing whenever Criterion's soon-to-be-released Criterion Blu-ray and DVD was discussed, but much like the film, that doesn't mean it's any less stunning on its fifth or thirtieth screening. Jay Shaw's Repo Man print will be sold through Mondo later today. Be sure to follow @mondonews for the exact drop details. To see more of Shaw's work, head over to kingdomofnonsense.com and follow @ironjaiden on Twitter. Good night and good luck!

Jay Shaw's "Massage Parlor Murders" Movie Poster (NSFW)

Jay Shaw has quickly become the poster boy for exploitation cinema, literally. Like a psycho killer wielding a serrated blade, Shaw has carved himself out a reputation as one of the few artists who can truly communicate (in screen printed form) what makes these usually gory, cheap, titillating films so unbelievably fun. Working with Vinegar Syndrome, a company I'm ashamed to admit I wasn't familiar with until yesterday, Jay did what Jay does best, crafted a killer poster for their upcoming release, Massage Parlor Murders.

Massage Parlor Murders Movie Poster
Jay Shaw
18" x 24" (Screen Print) - Signed and Numbered
$35 - Limited to 74

I've never seen the film, but this hypnotizing print is unbelievably beautiful and, in my humble opinion, fully deserving of a blind purchase. Shaw's ability to merge, morph, and subvert the individual elements in his work often leads to something far greater (and more frightening) than the sum of its parts.

You can purchase one of Jay's Massage Parlor Murders prints at the Vinegar Syndrome website for only $35. The poster measures 18" x 24" and is limited to an edition of 74. For fans who likes their paper stock on the thicker side, there's also the wood variant printed on MDF core maple wood. For more info on Mr. Shaw (aka Iron Jaiden), head over to kingdomofnonsense.com and follow @ironjaiden on Twitter. Be sure to check out vinegarsyndrome.com, their Facebook page, and follow @vinegarsyndrome if you have any interest in exploitation cinema.

I'm guessing, like me, the majority of you have never heard of this film. To that I say, watched the damned trailer! Warning: there are lots and lots of boobies in this video and it's most definitely not safe for work.

And scene.

Jay Shaw's "Zero Charisma" Movie Poster

If you visit this site with any regularity, you already know I tend to write reviews for film and television inspired prints that are either currently on sale or are about to go on sale. And while I'll still be pouring the majority of my efforts into those sorts of posts, my daily "Poster Per Diem" feature will focus on awesome prints that have since sold out, never existed in the first place (AKA concept posters) or just bear mentioning. In other words: this is my chance to say, "I never got a chance, for whatever reason, to write about you on this here website, but I think you're really purty and I want to let the world know." Or something like that. Oh, and Per diem is latin for "per day" or "each day."

Zero Charisma Movie Poster
Jay Shaw

For those of you who didn't get to experience SXSW this year (which, let's be honest, is most of us), I come bearing gifts. Well, not so much "gifts" as it is a single JPEG of a sharp looking poster by artist Jay Shaw for the indie comedy Zero Charisma. No idea if these will be available for purchase at any point, but the movie is getting some pretty decent reviews (you can read a few here, here and here), so it's definitely a possibility. To see more of the artist's work, visit his blog and follow @ironjaiden on Twitter. If you'd like to learn more about the film, head to zerocharismathemovie.com.

Heads Up: Jay Shaw's "The Amityville Horror" Movie Poster

I hope everyone had a nice Valentine's Day, but now we're moving on to the important stuff. The really, really important stuff. I'm of course talking about Skuzzles' latest print release, which aims to commemorate the Lutz family's trial of terrors experienced circa 1979. And what better way to celebrate the original Amityville Horror than by letting artist Jay Shaw take a stab at it. Wouldn't you know it, Jay has designed an absolutely stunning poster that creatively captures the film's descent into madness. The artist discussing his process (taken from the Skuzzles blog):
"As you know I tend to follow the Polish school of poster design so my stuff is usually very conceptual and a bit weird. I'm not a big fan of obvious design. I also like strong central images on top of stark backgrounds. To me you get the most visual punch doing things that way.
Out of the chimney is pouring a highly detailed smokey ectoplasm that makes up George's face. Replacing George's eyes are the infamous windows that serve as the house's eyes. The idea here is that George is becoming the evil that is the house. It's also a nod to his incessant 'chill' and need to stack log after log into the fireplace."
Also, I freaking love the retro title typography.

Heads Up: Jay Shaw's "Escape from New York" Movie Poster

The Jay Shaw Fan Club, I mean, Posterocalypse, has long been (and by "long" I mean about a year and a half) singing the praises of Jay's meteoric rise in the movie / gig poster community. The guy's incredibly talented and has a seemingly endless amount of energy and inspiration. (I seriously don't know how he's still alive and well given his prolific output.) In addition to everything he's done with Mondo, Jack White, the Denver Film Festival, Twenty-Eyes Collective, and Gallery 1988, among many others, the man also found time to collaborate with Death Waltz Recording, creating the artwork for their recent Escape from New York vinyl release. Death Waltz has since screen printed the artwork and turned it into yet another wonderful Jay Shaw movie poster! Note: as of this writing there are only 19 prints available. In other words, run!

Escape from New York Movie Poster
Jay Shaw
12" x 12" (Screen Print) - Signed and Numbered
£10 - Limited to 100

You can pick up Jay's Escape from New York poster through Death Waltz's website for £10 (approximately $16). The print measures 12" x 12" and is limited to an edition of 100. For all things Death Waltz, head over to deathwaltzrecordingcompany.com and follow @deathwaltzrecs on Twitter. For more info on the artist, visit kingdomofnonsense.com and follow @tweetofnonsense. Happy Friday, folks!

Heads Up: Jay Shaw's Universal Monster Movie Posters

Mondo Gallery's recent Universal Monster show has already given us a ton of amazing artwork. From Martin Ansin's jaw-dropping Frankenstein to Laurent Durieux's five incredible posters, I would have been content with what Mondo had already given us. But wait, there's more! It turns out Posterocalypse favorite Jay Shaw also created some fantastic looking monster movie prints and (lucky for you and I) they'll be available through Mondo at a random time later today!

The Mummy Movie Poster
Jay Shaw
18" x 24" (Screen Print) - Numbered
$35 - Limited to 175

Shaw's Mummy print is absolutely wonderful. It captures the somber tone of the film and is jam-packed with tons of tiny details. Case in point: it took me at least three long stares before I even noticed the face formed by the falling sand. Bonkers! Shaw's poster measures 18" x 24" and is limited to an edition of 175.

Creature from the Black Lagoon Movie Poster
Jay Shaw
18" x 24" (Screen Print) - Numbered
$35 - Limited to 175

I'm torn between Jay's Creature from the Black Lagoon print and his Mummy poster. Thankfully, no one has a gun pointed at my head forcing me to choose a favorite. (Wouldn't that be crazy, though?) Both are exceptional, and offer up great interpretations of the films while wholly remaining Jay Shaw originals. The Creature from the Black Lagoon poster will be available on Thursday (11/8) for $35 at a random time.

The Wolf Man Movie Poster
Jay Shaw
18" x 24" (Screen Print) - Numbered
$35 - Limited to 175

And last, but certainly not least, we have Shaw's The Wolf Man. What better way to celebrate the Universal classic than by focusing on Chaney Jr.'s hairy mug? This poster reminds me just how amazing Jack Pierce and his exceptional monster make-up was and still is. The Wolf Man print will cost $35 and is limited to an edition of 175. It will be available sometime on Thursday (11/8).

To learn more about artist Jay Shaw, check out kingdomofnonsense.com and follow him on Twitter @tweetofnonsense. If you're liking these prints, but have no idea why these movies are all that important, pick up Universal Classic Monsters: The Essential Collection. You won't be sorry. And of course, be sure to follow @monodnews for specific drop times.

Write Up: Mondo's Remaining NYCC Movie Posters

I'm blown away by how many posters Mondo commissions. Will it ever end? And if so, how on Earth do we stop it from ending?! Never mind, never mind. I'm overreacting, because if Thursday's massive drop suggests anything at all, it's that, no, Mondo will forever be our top tier movie print provider and will continue to feed our seemingly endless hunger for cinematic wall candy. The following artwork will be available at a random time through mondotees.com.

Shaun of the Dead Movie Poster (Regular)
Jock
36" x 24" (Screen Print) - Numbered
$45 - Limited to 400

Shaun of the Dead Movie Poster (Ed Variant)
Jock
36" x 24" (Screen Print) - Numbered
$75 - Limited to 175

If you're not a fan of Shaun of the Dead, then I'm not a fan of you. Alright, alright. That came off as a little harsh. I guess we can still be buds, just not best buds. Not ever. The film is, after all, my all-time favorite zom com. True, the zomedy sub-genre is not a heavily populated neighborhood, but Shaun clearly reigns high above all other contenders. Imagine my excitement (with just a tinge of apprehension) when I first heard Mondo had released a poster celebrating such a beloved movie. Cue me running to the nearest computer and googling "Mondo Shaun of the Dead." That's when I fell in love. For my money, nobody does chaos and carnage like Jock. His illustrations don't sit comfortably on the page, they explode, and there's a good chance someone's going to lose an eye. If, like me, you're always happy to get more Shaun in your life, I'd highly recommend picking up either the regular or variant (I'm partial to the regular) version of Jock's Shaun of the Dead poster tomorrow through Mondo. Visit 4twenty.co.uk to see more of the artist's work and be sure to follow him on Twitter @jock4twenty.

Phantasm Movie Poster
Phantom City Creative
24" x 36" (Screen Print) - Numbered
$45 - Limited to 280

Every time a Phantom City Creative poster gets released, my week gets a little better, and if memory serves, an angel gets its wings ... or in this case, gets its wings ripped off by the Tall Man's minions via an inter-dimensional mirror. Either way, my week just got more awesome. Not only was PCC's print inspired by the cult phenomenon Phantasm (cannot wait for John Dies at the End), the Toronto based studio created an absolutely gorgeous work of art, effectively one-upping their brilliant The Burning poster. Also, you've got to give it up to anyone who can properly illustrate and convey the menacing terror and awkwardness that is Angus Scrimm's Tall Man. Yes, Phantom City Creative's Phantasm poster will almost surely give you nightmares, but whatever doesn't kill you only makes you stronger, right? (I'm pretty sure there's a point in there somewhere.) PCC's Phantasm print will be available tomorrow through Mondo at a random time for $45. To learn more about Phantom City, head over to phantomcitycreative.com, check out their store, and follow @phantomcitycrtv.

City of the Living Dead Movie Poster
Randy Ortiz
12" x 36" (Movie Poster) - Numbered
$35 - Limited to 125

My knowledge of Fulci is a pretty slim. I've seen Don't Torture a Duckling, Zombie, and The House by the Cemetery. That's 3 films out of the 56 movies he directed, meaning I've never seen City of the Living Dead and won't have much to offer in terms of the poster's inspiration. I do, however, have some thoughts on Randy's artwork. In short: I like it. It reminds me of his recently released Bloodsport print in that it's grounded by a simple black background and focuses on a disembodied face, though there are a few more elements at play here than in what he put together for Skuzzles. Based on a quick synopsis of the film, which describes a clergyman's suicide as the catalyst that opens a doorway to hell, it appears Ortiz has cleverly made the portal to the world above double as the white in a priest's clerical collar. Well played. The hangman's noose is a nice touch too. Randy Ortiz's City of the Living Dead print will be available through Mondo later today at a random time. The poster measures 12" x 36" and is limited to an edition of 125. Follow @damnthedesign on Twitter and direct your browser to damnthedesign.com to learn more about Mr. Ortiz.

Friday the 13th Part III Movie Poster
Jay Shaw
18" x 24" (Screen Print) - Numbered
$35 - Limited to 175

At last we come to Jay Shaw's stab at Friday the 13th Part III. There's a real intensity to this poster and I think it's almost entirely because of those unrelenting, bulging peepers. I imagine if you placed Shaw's Friday the 13th Part III, Ortiz's City of the Living Dead, and Phantom City Creative's Phantasm poster on each wall in a triangular room, whatever entered said room would immediately burst into demonic flames due to their combined ocular power. Those are some evil eyes, folks! Much like the masked Voorhees, Jay's design is not clean, nor symmetrical. Shaw's approach here is as gritty as Jason's machete is sharp, and, for that reason, would make the the perfect addition to any Camp Crystal Lake reunion. As a quick aside, can someone please go ahead and change out the artwork that's currently on Part III's IMDb page or at least swap it out for a higher res version? Good grief. Jay Shaw's excellent Friday the 13th Part III movie poster will be available through Mondo for $35. To learn more about the artist formerly known as Iron Jaiden, be sure to visit kingdomofnonsense.com and follow @tweetofnonsense on Twitter.

As is always the case, be sure to follow @mondonews for the exact drop time. Good night / morning and good luck!

Heads Up: Mondo's "Jodorowsky's Dune," "Beyond the Black Rainbow" and "Wrong" Movie Posters

I quit my job, got me a wife, had me a honeymoon, and will be moving to the Bay Area within the next two weeks. To describe all of this as a big change would be an understatement. It's exciting, frightening, fun, terrifying, and all of those other emotions I forgot to mention. With that said, I still have one thing in my life that's not going anywhere: Posterocalypse! This week I'll mostly be playing catch up (since I missed quite a bit this past month), so apologies in advance for the things you've already seen and thanks for sticking around!

The following were initially released in Austin during Fantastic Fest, and wow, they're absolutely jaw dropping. For those unable to attend the coolest film festival in the United States, you'll have a chance to pick up the Jodorowsky's Dune, Beyond the Black Rainbow and Wrong posters tomorrow (10/4) at a random time through Mondo's website. And don't forget to follow @mondonews on Twitter for the official drop notice.

Jodorowsky's Dune Movie Poster

$45 - Limited to 290

Beyond the Black Rainbow Movie Poster
Jay Shaw
18" x 24" (Screen Print) - Numbered
$35 - Limited to 135

Wrong Movie Poster
Jay Shaw

$35 - Limited to 190

To learn more about artist Kilian Eng, who also created an amazing Dune poster celebrating David Lynch's oddity, be sure to visit his Tumblr and Facebook page. And to see more of Jay Shaw's work, head over to kingdomofnonsense.com and follow @tweetofnonsense. Finally, if you haven't already, go watch Beyond the Black Rainbow. It's a stellar tone poem (with the tone being trippy 1970s science fiction) and features a killer synth soundtrack.

Follow Up: Jay Shaw's "Don't Go Out Tonight" Art Show

If you've never heard of Blue Underground, then there's a good chance you've never experienced some of cinema's most shocking, action-packed, exploitative, gory, and hilarious guilty pleasures in existence. Founded by William Lustig (the same mad man who brought us Maniac, Vigilante, and Maniac Cop 1, 2, and 3), Blue Underground has become a cineaste's dream thanks in large part to their exhaustive film restoration and unceasing dedication to sharing the beautiful, strange, and disturbing with us all. Mix in some Jay Shaw, an artist the poster community has come to love over the last year and a half, and who's been entrusted with creating a show inspired by the titles in Blue Underground's library, and you've got yourself one truly twisted art collection. Now, in all honesty, Blue Undergound's films are very niche, but I was still a bit surprised that so many of the prints from Shaw's "Don't Go Out Tonight" show are still available. With that said, I'm not one to look a gift horse in the mouth and would recommend picking up one, two, or ten of these prints as soon as possible.

If you have any interest in these cult classics, I'd recommend pulling the trigger sooner than later. To learn more about artist Jay Shaw, head over to kingdomofnonsense.com and follow him on Twitter @tweetofnonsense. For the record, I snagged Shaw's Django (no longer available), Torso, The Prowler, The New York Ripper, and The Nesting posters.

Heads Up: Death Waltz's "Halloween II" and "Halloween III" Vinyl Albums

I've heard that vinyl recordings give off a musical "warmth" that you just can't get with digital. And we can't forget about the cool factor, which I believe empirically states that regardless of a record's quality, being in close proximity to said vinyl imparts an aura of knowledge, wisdom, and sophisticated musical taste to everyone in the immediate area. There's also something incredibly romantic about the tangibility and immediacy of a record that just doesn't exist in other audio formats. So, why on Earth did it take me so long to delve into the wonderful world of vinyl? Well, I guess the short answer would be I was intimidated. Rightly or wrongly, I always pictured those who were into records as the musical elite - snobs who would no doubt raise their nose at me and my naiveté the moment I approached the register. How wrong I was, dear friends! Thanks to the folks at Death Waltz Recording Company, I've been slowly amassing a beautiful record collection that appeals to the movie lover in me both visually and auditorily. What does all this mean? Hmm. I guess this rather long-winded exploration of my troubled psyche is my way of telling you that you need to support these guys. Not only does Death Waltz use some of today's most talented cine-obsessed artists when designing their album covers, they go that extra mile, working with the people behind the music to ensure they have the best possible product out there. As proof of their dedication to everything I love, Death Waltz just put their Halloween II and Halloween III: Season of the Witch albums on sale a few minutes ago. Need more convincing? Take a peek at the beautiful artwork below.

Halloween II Album
Artwork: Brandon Schaefer
Music By: John Carpenter & Alan Howarth
£20 - Limited to 400 (I think)

Halloween III: Season of the Witch Album
Artwork: Jay Shaw
Music By: John Carpenter & Alan Howarth
£20 - Limited to 400 (I think)

Death Waltz's Halloween II and Halloween III albums are currently available for pre-sale through their website for £20 each. Both albums also come with a 12" x 12" lithograph print and a folded A2 poster. If you have any interest at all in amazing music, amazing artwork, and the films that made the two previous elements possible, be sure to sign up for the Death Waltz newsletter and follow @deathwaltzrecs on Twitter. Oh, and did you see tricked that out black and orange record? Beautiful stuff!

Best Of: Gallery 1988's "Jeff Boyes, Joshua Budich & Jay Shaw" Art Show

I'm absolutely gutted that I couldn't make it to last night's show at Gallery 1988 Venice. I had planned to be there and finally meet some of my favorite artists, unfortunately, some wedding preparations necessitated an emergency trip to the Bay Area. So here I am, sitting on my mom's couch trying to put this post together, with her 60 pound Australian Shepherd staring at me in ways that aren't entirely comforting. But enough of my whining, what I'm really here to talk about are my favorite pieces (that are still available) from the recent Jeff Boyes, Joshua Budich and Jay Shaw art show. Note - as of this writing all of these prints are still available for purchase.

The Conversation Movie Poster
Jay Shaw
18" x 24" (Screen Print) - Signed and Numbered
$30 - Limited to 100

All the President's Men Movie Poster
Jay Shaw
18" x 24" (Screen Print) - Signed and Numbered
$30 - Limited to 100

Blow Out Movie Poster
Jay Shaw
18" x 24" (Screen Print) - Signed and Numbered
$30 - Limited to 100

Jay Shaw's paranoia-themed movie posters are deviously brilliant in their execution. From a distance they're deceptively simple, but as you edge closer, all the minuscule details rise to the surface often completely changing your understanding of the artwork altogether and / or strengthening the poster's connection to the film. Case in point: Shaw's All the President's Men print. From afar, we're clearly seeing a somewhat distorted picture of Richard Nixon, but on closer inspection, it becomes evident that the President's head is completely made up of characters that you might find on a, oh, I don't know, typewriter! (I'm also reminded of all the ASCII art that was so popular back in the dial-up days of the Internet, but I'm guessing that's more likely me projecting than the artist's original intent.) It's a print that works on multiple levels and is easy on the eyes while also being tonally in check with the movie - a combination of elements which are quickly becoming a hallmark of Jay's art. Ultimately, Shaw's more stripped-down design for The Conversation ended up being my favorite of his. Not only because it's a poster for The Conversation (which is freaking amazing in and of itself), but it also concisely boils down the entire film and Hackman's character to a single simple image, while making the typography integral to the design instead of sticking it on as an afterthought. I think it's safe to say that this star will continue to rise, that is, if he doesn't collapse from exhaustion brought on by his nonstop work ethic! All of Jay's posters (sans his Invasion of the Body Snatchers print) are still available through Gallery 1988's website. To learn more about Mr. Shaw, sometimes known as Iron Jaiden, visit kingdomofnonsense.com and follow him @tweetofnonsense on Twitter.

“L.A. Massacre” Art Print
Jeff Boyes
18" x 24" (Screen Print) - Signed and Numbered
$50 - Limited to 60
Inspired By: Thrashin'

I've never seen Thrashin', but that doesn't really change the fact that I think this is a radical print. You've got to admire Boyes for even choosing to posterize this film. It should be dumb, it should be corny, it should be a big fail, but Jeff has managed to make something fun and cool without having to lean on the "it's cool because it's ironic" crutch. The artist also did one hell of a job depicting a young Josh Brolin (especially that hair) and Robert Rusler, and I've got immediate respect for any poster that uses split-fountain printing in a way that actually adds something to the artwork, which I think the red / violet skyline does admirably. This is the first time I've written about Jeff Boyes on this site and I'm thinking it certainly won't be the last time. Jeff has a bunch more prints available (including this one) through Gallery 1988's online storefront right now. You can see more of Jeff's artwork at visualtechnicians.com.

"Tetsuo" Art Print
Joshua Budich
18" x 18" (Screen Print) - Signed and Numbered
$40 - Limited to 75
Inspired By: Akira

"Dave" Art Print
Joshua Budich
18" x 18" (Screen Print) - Signed and Numbered
$40 - Limited to 75
Inspired By: 2001: A Space Odyssey

"Optimus" Art Print
Joshua Budich
18" x 18" (Screen Print) - Signed and Numbered
$40 - Limited to 75
Inspired By: The Transformers

I don't have too much more to say about Joshua Budich's posters that hasn't already been written in my review of his "Tetsuo" print (you can read it by clicking here), but I will say this: out of the three artists at this show, I think Budich had the most interesting and experimental theme. There's no denying that Boyes and Shaw brought their A-game, but I was extra impressed by Joshua's "Sistine Pop" series and his continuing evolution as an artist. All of Budich's posters are still available for purchase through Gallery1988.com, and you can visit joshuabudich.com for more info on, that's right, Joshua Budich.

Poster Per Diem: Jay Shaw's "Paths of Glory" Movie Poster

A hearty thanks (and free print) go to reader Brett Smith who came up with the awesome title for my new daily poster column "Poster Per Diem." What do you think? Personally, I'm rather fond of it. For those wondering what the hell "Poster Per Diem" is / means / smells like, here's my not at all concise description. If you visit this site with any regularity, you already know I tend to write reviews for film and television inspired prints that are either currently on sale or are about to go on sale. And while I'll still be pouring the majority of my efforts into these sorts of posts, my daily "Poster Per Diem" feature will focus on awesome prints that have since sold out or never existed in the first place (AKA concept posters). In other words: this is my chance to say, "I never got a chance, for whatever reason, to write about you on this here website, but I think you're really purty and I want to let the world know." Or something like that. Oh, and Per diem is latin for "per day" or "each day."

Paths of Glory Movie Poster
Jay Shaw (AKA Iron Jaiden)
18" x 24" (Screen Print) - Numbered
Sold Out - Limited to 225

I'll be honest, I own a ton of art that I absolutely adore, but that I'm fairly certain would never elicit any sort of appreciation from my non-poster collecting pals. But when I see something like Shaw's Paths of Glory poster, I'm hard pressed to imagine anyone who could think this print was anything but beautiful. Also, I would happily accept this as the new official artwork for Criterion's Paths of Glory packaging. If someone out there has seen fit to DIY themselves a Blu-ray cover out of Jay's work, shoot me an email. Jay Shaw's "Bullhead" Movie Poster

When I think back to 2010, the emergence of artist Olly Moss comes to mind. His ability to make a clever minimalist design out of pretty much anything was, and still is, incredibly impressive and stood in stark contrast to the bursting-with-detail artwork of Tyler Stout and Martin Ansin. Well, I may be a bit presumptuous in saying this, but I feel like 2012 will definitely be the year that Jay Shaw (AKA Iron Jaiden) hits in a big, big way. Don't believe me? Take a look at his amazing poster for Drafthouse Films' Bullhead below.

Bullhead Movie Poster
Jay Shaw (AKA Iron Jaiden)
18" x 24" - Numbered
$30 - Limited to 80

Not only is Jay a clearly talented artist, his work thus far has shown a remarkably deep knowledge of art and film history. He created a loving tribute to the Blaxploitation gem The Spook Who Sat by the Door for Cinema Overdrive. He crafted a retro and surreal print for Drafthouse Films' Comin' At Ya! 3D and now he's channeled the strange and dreamlike style that has long been the trademark of Polish poster art for the film Bullhead. There's already been a great article written on this print at HitFix, but I did want to briefly talk about my take on Shaw's work and the movie itself. I remember seeing Bullhead at last year's Fantastic Fest and being completely blown away. Bullhead isn't a thrill-a-minute action film, it's a thoroughly contemplative story about Matthias Schoenaerts' hormone-injecting (in more ways than one) Jacky Vanmarsenille and his attempt to negotiate his personal and professional demons. He's a flawed-man who's had to deal with some very intense and personal traumas of both the physical and psychological variety. I probably couldn't be any vaguer, could I? Due to these issues, there are many scenes where he's on the precipice of full-on rage, much like a bull ready to gore its agitator. See where I'm going with this? Jay has captured the animalistic nature of both the man and his chosen line of work with pitch-perfect execution. The desolate background behind the hoofed man, whose body has been partially transformed into that of a beast, only further echoes the harsh world Jacky, the film's lead, tries to survive in. My final take: great poster, killer typography, and a beautiful fusion of new and old.

Jay's Bullhead movie poster will be available through Mondo at a random time during today's Oscar broadcast. The poster measures 18" x 24", is limited to an edition 80, and will only cost $30.
