Jason Edmiston's "Killer Klowns from Outer Space" Movie Posters

If you visit this site with any regularity, you already know I tend to write reviews for film and television inspired prints that are either currently on sale or are about to go on sale. And while I'll still be pouring the majority of my efforts into those sorts of posts, my daily "Poster Per Diem" feature will focus on awesome prints that have since sold out, never existed in the first place (AKA concept posters) or just bear mentioning. In other words: this is my chance to say, "I never got a chance, for whatever reason, to write about you on this here website, but I think you're really purty and I want to let the world know." Or something like that. Oh, and Per diem is latin for "per day" or "each day."

I meant to write about theses beauties when they first went on sale, but for some reason I just never got around to it. For that alone, I deserve a shovel to the head, because these posters are positively jaw-dropping. Jason Edmiston, a man who's already crafted a large body of stunning prints, deserves an extra round of kudos and maybe some sort of presidential medal of valor good art-making (apparently naming presidential medals is not one of my strengths) for his ode to that 1980s cult gem Killer Klowns from Outer Space. Wouldn't you know it, the posters are now long gone, but you can find more stellar work on the Internetz (I added a 'z') at skuzzles.com and jasonedmiston.com. Heads Up: Jay Shaw's "The Amityville Horror" Movie Poster

I hope everyone had a nice Valentine's Day, but now we're moving on to the important stuff. The really, really important stuff. I'm of course talking about Skuzzles' latest print release, which aims to commemorate the Lutz family's trial of terrors experienced circa 1979. And what better way to celebrate the original Amityville Horror than by letting artist Jay Shaw take a stab at it. Wouldn't you know it, Jay has designed an absolutely stunning poster that creatively captures the film's descent into madness. The artist discussing his process (taken from the Skuzzles blog):

"As you know I tend to follow the Polish school of poster design so my stuff is usually very conceptual and a bit weird. I'm not a big fan of obvious design. I also like strong central images on top of stark backgrounds. To me you get the most visual punch doing things that way.

Out of the chimney is pouring a highly detailed smokey ectoplasm that makes up George's face. Replacing George's eyes are the infamous windows that serve as the house's eyes. The idea here is that George is becoming the evil that is the house. It's also a nod to his incessant 'chill' and need to stack log after log into the fireplace."

Also, I freaking love the retro title typography.

Heads Up: Skuzzle's "Teen Wolf" and "Bloodsport" Movie Posters

I meant to talk about the following three posters before the big move, but naively underestimated the amount of work it takes to pack a one bedroom apartment and move its contents 330 miles North. Thankfully, I'm (sort of) set up at my new locale and loaded to the gills with Bayer Back & Body, in possession of an Adderall-like focus, and intent on delving into exactly what makes Skuzzles' latest offerings so bloody fantastic. Let's take a look at the evidence, shall we?

As you may already know, I'm a big, big fan of Ghoulish Gary Pullin. And, if like me, you're looking at the above, I think it's safe to say he's done the Michael J. Fox starring cinematic slice of 1980s life justice ... hirsute, bristly, lupine justice. There's a lot to love about Pullin's delightful taken on Teen Wolf, but my favorite touch is something you probably didn't immediately notice. I'm talking about the ingenious use of basketballs to suggest the varied lunar phases above the film's title. It's not a mind-shattering addition by any means, but it speaks volumes about the artist's attention to detail, as it's clear the guy behind this print gave a damn and then some about his design and the film. A regular and variant version of Gary's Teen Wolf poster, both measuring 24" x 36", are currently available through skuzzles.com. Not content to leave the 80s be, Skuzzles also recently released an officially licensed Bloodsport print by artist Randy Ortiz. Unlike the jam-packed Teen Wolf movie posters, Randy's Bloodsport artwork has a simple and singular focus: Jean-Claude Van Damme's bloodied but determined visage. While I wouldn't have minded seeing a spinning kick or two, I've got to admit, there's something really intimidating and altogether badass about the design's stripped down approach. This brings back warm (if hazy) memories of watching Showtime as a kid. (Yay for children watching uber-violent uber-cheesy action flicks without their parents' knowledge!) Randy Ortiz's Bloodsport print is currently available through the Skuzzles storefront for $35. Fernando Fro Reza's "Mother's Day" Movie Poster

The gents at Skuzzles are at it again in their quest to bring us more deliciously schlocky Troma goodness, this time in the form of a beautifully crafted Mother's Day screen print by artist Fernando Fro Reza. Behold!

I really dig this poster for two main reasons. First and foremost, it's a great looking print. That much is obvious, but more specifically, Fernando's incredibly classy artwork serves as strangely perfect counterpoint to the low budget hillbilly horror fest that is Mother's Day. Up until now, Skuzzles has mainly worked with artists who I feel are perfect at capturing the gonzo insanity that lies at the heart of most Troma productions, but by commissioning Fro and utilizing his cleaner, more minimalist approach to design, a sort of cognitive dissonance occurs that makes the work even creepier and more disturbing than it may have been in the hands of another artist. Second, it's a Fernando Fro Reza screen print! I know that may not seem like much, but the vast majority of his work is in giclée form, and while there's absolutely nothing wrong with that, in my mind, a screen print feels just a bit more unique and handcrafted. It's a brilliant poster and I'd love to see more like it!

Rhys Cooper's "The Toxic Avenger" and "Surfer Nazis Must Die" Movie Posters

You may (or may not) remember I wrote about Godmachine's depiction of the Troma classic The Class of Nuke 'Em High in August. Well, the boys at Skuzzles are at it again, this time with an even more recognizable Lloyd Kaufman creation, The Toxic Avenger, and a slightly lesser known Troma treasure, Surf Nazis Must Die.

I've enjoyed many a midnight airing of The Toxic Avenger, but unfortunately I've never seen the Palme d'Or winning (not really) Surf Nazis Must Die. And although I've only seen half the films mentioned in tonight's post, I can say with complete certainty that Rhys Cooper is the perfect artist for this material. Rhys tends to create colorful, dynamic designs, but more importantly, he's not afraid to make something disgusting or gory - two adjectives that are often used to describe the work of Troma Studios. If I had to choose a favorite between the two prints, I'd choose the amazing double feature variant, thereby rendering the necessity to choose one over the other moot, but since that's kind of a cop-out, I'd probably have to pick Cooper's Toxic Avenger print. Though that's mostly because the film played such a big role in my childhood (does anyone remember Toxic Crusaders?). Much like Godmachine's Class of Nuke 'Em High prints, Rhys Cooper's posters succeed not only because they're gorgeous in a toxic-waste-meets-bloody-surfboards-multiplied-by-death-metal kind of way, but because Cooper's style, with his vibrant, no holds barred approach, closely parallels many of the inventive, defiant and earnest qualities which have become hallmarks of the Troma archive.

Godmachine's "The Class of Nuke 'Em High" Movie Posters

Skuzzles, the people behind the very cool Travis Bone Maximum Overdrive poster, are at it again. This time with a Godmachine print for the cult classic Class of Nuke 'Em High. As Skuzzles is a relatively new company to the movie artwork commissioning / curating scene, you may not have heard of them before, but I think it goes without saying that they're off to a great start.

I almost feel that reviewing a poster like this isn't necessary, but I'm going to do it anyway. The bottom line is this: if you like Class of Nuke 'Em High, if you like gory, oozy, exploitative films (i.e., the majority of Troma's output), then you know you need to get this poster the moment it comes out. Godmachine's artwork so perfectly encapsulates the dirty, gross, over-the-top insanity of Nuke' Em High it's not even funny (alright, I guess it's a little funny - it is a Troma film after all). You can practically feel the radioactive heat coming from that blinding neon green/yellow ink. I have no idea if this is the case or not, but this poster would be absolutely perfect if the neon green/yellow ink glowed in the dark. This is only the first poster in Skuzzles' Troma poster series, so be prepared to see more awesome, vomit-inducing (in a good way) prints in the near future.

Godmachine's Class of Nuke 'Em High posters will be available on Friday (8/5) at a random time through skuzzles.com. The regular and the variant posters will cost $29 and $34 respectively. Given how much detail and content is packed in these 18" x 24" canvases those prices are downright amazing. I'm not exactly sure how the release announcement will go down, but it probably isn't a bad idea to immediately start following @SkuzzlesCan and subscribe to their newsletter.
