The insanely gifted/talented Sam Smith has done his good deed for the month by releasing his incredible
Black Swan poster for purchase. For those of you that haven't heard about the man, count yourself lucky - not only is he a wonderful artist (that occasionally works with Criterion!), he also happens to be an awesome drummer (that occassionally works with Ben Folds)! In summary, I think it's safe to say that the man has more talent in his left thumb than I do in the whole of my body.

Smith's
Black Swan poster was created as part of his top ten film posters of 2010 series. As part of this pet project, Sam decided to quickly craft a movie poster, in the same time it would take him to write a 250 to 500 word blog post, for each of his top ten films in 2010. Pretty straightforward, right? His number ten film turned out to be Darren Aronofsky's masterpiece,
Black Swan (my favorite
film of the year). One of the main reasons this poster works so well is its simplicity and elegance. With that said, simply saying the print is "purty" would be belittling the work. By using the two Ninas, Sam was able to represent the schism (white swan / black swan) in Natalie Portman's character. It's a beautifully understated poster and makes me desperately want Smith to do
The Fountain,
The Wrestler, Requiem for a Dream, and
Pi prints too.
The poster is available right now through Sam Smith's
store. The signed and numbered
Black Swan poster measures 18" x 24", is a 3-color screenprint, is limited to an edition of 30 (i.e., act fast) and only costs $20. Seriously,
buy this now. You should also take a look at
Sam's Myth, his blog, to see some of the other amazing artwork Sam has created (especially his
Criterion stuff). The man loves posters and film - it doesn't get much better than that.
Yeah, I know Sam....You're right, he is a wonderful artist, an awesome drummer.......and he is a really really really nice guy!!!
